국문 초록

타이완 퀴어문학의 대표적인 작품인 추먀오진(邱妙津)의 《악어노트(鰐魚手記)》(1994)는 성소수자로서 맞닥뜨려야 했던 내적 갈등을 진실하게 풀어놓음으로써 독자와 평단의 호응을 동시에 이끌어 냈으며, 발표와 함께 동성애 하위문화에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 타이완이 계엄해제 된 이후 1990년대 초 타이완 문단은 젠더 이슈가 급부상했으며, 특히 동성애를 주제로 한 문학 작품들이 괄목할만한 성장을 보였다. 기존의 억압적이고 경직되었던 문화 환경 속에서는 다루기 힘들었던 욕망과 금기들이 대거 문학으로 흘러들어왔으며, 동성애 문제는 그 가운데에서도 매우 급진적인 주제 중 하나였다고 할 수 있다. 앞서 바이셴융(白先勇)이 남성 동성애 서사로 당시 센세이션을 일으켰다면, 뒤이어 등장한 추먀오진은 그간 잘 다루어지지 않았던 여성 동성애 서사를 다룸으로써 타이완 퀴어문학과 그에 관한 논의를 확장시켰다. 소설은 주인공 ‘나’를 중심으로 한 수기형태를 빌어 동성애를 둘러싼 현실사회의 문제를 다루는 동시에 ‘악어’를 중심으로 한 에피소드를 통해 이를 알레고리적으로 구조화한다. 먼저 ‘나’가 겪는 일련의 경험과 심리변화가 주된 서사를 이루는데, 이때 동성애 정체성은 개인적인 범주에만 머무는 것이 아니라, 동성애를 둘러싼 지배적 문화구조와도 맞닿아 있다. 이들이 겪는 깊은 고통과 방황 그리고 욕망의 세계는 이성애 중심주의에서 배제된 이들의 삶이 결코 순탄하지 않음을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 아울러 ‘악어’를 중심으로 전개되는 일련의 에피소드들은 문화적 생산기제들이 특정 젠더 정체성을 어떻게 배제하고 주변화시키는지를 알레고리적으로 표현해낸다. 소설은 동성애 문제뿐만 아니라 사회에 존재하는 다양한 소수성을 우리가 어떠한 방식으로 사유해야 하는가라는 질문을 던져주고 있다.

영문 초록

Qiu Miaojin’s Notes of a Crocodile (1994), a work representing Taiwanese homosexual literature, had a tremendous influence on the subculture of homosexuality as soon as it was published. After the martial law was lifted in Taiwan, the issue of gender emerged rapidly in Taiwanese literary circles during the early 1990s. In particular, literary works under the theme of homosexuality showed noteworthy growth. The desires and taboos that had been difficult to deal with in the previous oppressive and rigid literature seeped inside literature in force. It can be said that the issue of homosexuality was one of the extremely radical themes even among those as well. If Bai Xianyong caused a sensation with the male homosexual narrative, Qiu Miaojin addresses the female homosexual narrative head-on. By unraveling the internal conflicts that had to be faced as a sexual minority, Notes of a Crocodile won favorable responses both from readers and literary critics alike. The novel is made up of notes the protagonist “I” writes and the episodes around a “crocodile.” First, the internal conflicts of the characters are concretely portrayed through “I” and minor characters. Here, the homosexual identity does not merely stay within the personal scope but is also in touch with the dominant cultural structure. The world of deep agony, wandering, and desires clearly demonstrates the fact that the lives of those who are excluded from heteronormativity are never smooth. Moreover, a series of episodes developed around the “crocodile” express how cultural production mechanisms marginalize a certain gender identity in an allegorical manner. The novel throws a question not only concerning the issue of homosexuality but also on what sort of a way we must contemplate the various minorities that exist in society.
