21세기 북미화인화문단편소설에 나타난 인종문제에 대한 관심과 표현

국문 초록

21세기 북미화인화문단편소설에는 다음 세 가지가 분명히 드러난다. 첫째, 화인 및 중국인을 제외한 다른 인종이 등장하는 작품이 그다지 많지 않다. 둘째, 다른 인종이 주요인물로 등장하는 작품의 비율과 비중이 매우 낮다. 셋째, 인종별로 등장 비율이나 역할 비중에서 큰 격차를 보인다. 21세기 북미화인화문단편소설에서 백인은 대개 권한 내지 권력을 가지고 있는 인물이거나 아니면 그것을 행사할 만한 지위 또는 부를 가지고 있는 인물로 묘사된다. 반면에 유색인종은 사회적 저층에 속하는 사람이 훨씬 많으며, 백인 인물에게서는 거의 볼 수 없는 문제적 인물이 한두 명 아니다. 더구나 유색인종 사이에도 격차가 있어서 아시아계에 대한 태도와 흑인이나 라틴계에 대한 태도가 다르다. 21세기 북미화인화문단편소설에서 화인작가는 백인의 주도권을 인정하고 그들의 승인을 받기 위해 노력하는 태도를 취한다. 그러나 기대와는 어긋나는 것에 대한 불만을 은연중에 일종의 왜곡된 방식으로 표출하기도 한다. 백인 남성은 화인 여성을 화인 남성으로부터 약탈해가지만 결국 그것은 이상적인 결합이 될 수 없다는 방식으로 서술된다. 화인 남성은 백인 여성의 성적 유혹에 끌리지만 결국 도덕적으로 자제하는데, 그 과정에서 판타지적 요소를 강하게 드러내는 방식으로 전개된다. 21세기 북미화인화문단편소설의 대부분은 백인의 인종이데올로기를 내재화한다. 백인을 우월화하고 유색인종을 저열화하며, 화인을 모범소수집단에 위치시키면서 인종의 등급화를 시도하고, 출발지 중국에서의 다수로서의 경험과 문화적 자부심을 고집함으로써 오히려 ‘인종의 삼각 관계’ 이데올로기를 고착시키고 있다. 다만 일부는 흑인에 대한 화인의 편견을 지적하고 원주민의 참상을 고발함으로써, 다른 소수인종과의 공감대 형성 및 연대의 가능성을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

The following three things are evident in 21C North American Chinese-language short stories. First, there are not so many works featuring non-Chinese races. Second, the proportion of works in which non-Chinese races appear as major characters is very low. Third, there are wide gaps in appearance frequency or role importance by race. In 21C North American Chinese-language short stories, Whites characters are usually described as people with authority or power, or people with status or wealth to exercise it. On the other hand, POC characters are likely to belong to the lower social classes, and are often problematic people that are rarely seen in Whites characters. Moreover, there is discrimination among POC characters, so the attitude toward Asian characters differs from that toward Blacks or Latinos characters. In 21C North American Chinese-language short stories, the writers recognize the initiative of Whites and try to win their approval. However, the writers sometimes implicitly express their dissatisfaction with what is contrary to expectations in a kind of distorted way. It is mainly expressed in two ways. First, it is described that Whites men loot Chinese women from Chinese men, but in the end, it cannot be an ideal combination. Second, it is described that Chinese men are attracted to the sexual seductions of Whites women, but eventually morally restrain themselves, and fantasy elements are strongly revealed in the description. Most of the 21C North American Chinese-language short stories internalize the racial ideology of Whites. It makes Whites superior and POC inferior, places the overseas Chinese in a model minority group, and attempts to grade by race. It rather sticks to the ideology of ‘racial triangulation’ by insisting on the experience and cultural pride of the overseas Chinese, who were the majority in China. However, some works showed the possibility of forming a consensus and solidarity with other minorities by pointing out overseas Chinese’s prejudice against Blacks and accusing the plight of indigenous people.
