박완서 단편소설과 말년의 양식에 대한 시론적 검토

국문 초록

글은 에드워드 사이드가 제안한 ‘말년성’ 개념에 착안하여 박완서의 마지막 소설들을 검토한다. 이를 위해, 우선 주로 노년의 삶이 제시된 박완서의 단편소설들을 분석함으로써 주요 열쇠어들을 추출하고, 만년의 세 작품에 나타난 말년의 양식을 살펴보았다. 만년의 세 작품에서는 반성과 각성이라는 계기, 공통감각으로서 욕망의 긍정성, 연민과 공감의 정동 등에 일정 부분 균열이 가는 것처럼 보인다. 박완서는 말년의 양식을 통해 이 세계에서 가시적이거나 형식적인 화해를 불가능하게 만드는 요소를 성찰한다. 이중의 부정을 통해 반성이 불가능한 지점을 드러내고, 원죄의식을 통해 욕망의 부정적 양태를 가시화하고, 죽음의 부정을 통해 타인을 자기 욕망의 대상화하는 폭력과 결별하고자 한다. 이 작품들에서 관찰되는 특징들이 그동안 작가가 구축해왔던 세계를 취소하거나 철회하는 것은 아니다. 그러나 말년의 양식은 이의 실현을 어렵게 만드는 세계의 복잡성을 더 논쟁적으로 드러낸다. 박완서의 말년의 양식이 보여주는 성취는 작가의 예외적인 산출물이 아니라 오랜 통찰의 결과물이다. 자신이 동시대와 맺어왔던 양식(다시 말해 작가가 작품과 맺는 총체적인 관계의 대상화, 작품의 총체적 표현성)을 파기하거나 교정하는 것은 작가적 생산성을 유지하는 방식이다. 작가의 작업은 이 세 편을 끝으로 마감되었으나 세 편의 작품은 박완서 소설이 내장한 겹의 두께를 다시 한번 사료하도록 이끈다.

영문 초록

Utilizing the concept of ‘lateness’ proposed by Edward Said, we tried to look at Park Wan-seo’s last fictions. To this end, the main keywords were extracted by analyzing Park Wan-seo's short stories, and ‘the late style’ shown in three works in later years was examined. In the works of later years, the feelings of ‘reflection and awakening’, ‘the positivity of desire’, and ‘compassion and sympathy’ that the artist has crafted throughout his life seem to be destroyed to some extent. Park Wan-seo reflects on the elements that create cracks in this world and make visible or formal reconciliation impossible. Through the double denial, it shows the point where reflection is impossible. In addition, through original sin, the negative aspect of desire is visualized, and through the denial of death, the urge to death that makes others the object of my desire is denied. It is true that the achievements of Park Wan-seo's ‘late style’ in his later years are not exceptional products of the artist, but the result of long deliberation and thinking. Destroying or correcting the style writer has established with writer contemporaries (in other words, the objectification of the writer's overall relationship with her work and the totality expressiveness of writer's work) is a way to maintain productivity as an writer. Paradoxically speaking, if some of Park Wan-seo's last fictions show ‘the late style’, it can mean that Park Wan-seo's productivity of fictions has been consistently maintained. Park Wan-seo's works were finished with these three works, but it can be said with caution that these works opened a new horizon for Park Wan-seo's world.
