류주현 소설의 이분법적 인식론을 바탕으로 한 인물 유형과 열린 결말 연구

국문 초록

류주현에 대한 연구는 그의 방대한 작품 이력과는 역설적으로 미비한 실정이다. 전후 세대 작가군에 틀림없이 포함되면서도 작품의 양적 질적인 성취에 비해 그 평가와 연구가 미흡한 이 작가에 대해, 본고는 전후문학을 논함에 있어 류주현은 왜 변방에 서 있게 되었는가라는 질문에서 출발한다. 전후라는 시간적 체험이 전쟁으로 인한 내몰림, 이동 등의 공간적 구성물로 귀속되는 바 개인적 경험, 이력과 떼어놓을 수 없는 이 시기의 사정을 고려하며 류주현의 문학을 읽을 때 그의 작품들이 공교롭게도 주류의 포획망으로부터 자주 비켜서고 있다는 점은 전후문학의 범주에 대해 다시금 고민하게 한다. 필자는 그 질문에 대한 답으로 작품 자체의 독자적 해석 가능성을 제시하고 자 한다. 연구의 시작점으로 작품의 초기라 할 수 있는 1950년대 작품 중 공통의 주제어로 분석이 가능한 작품을 추려 해석해 봄으로써 류주현 문학에 대한 연구의 기반을 마련하고자 한다. 이 시기 류주현의 인물들은 공통적으로 이분법적 기획으로 세계를 인식하는데, 그것은 곧 작가가 당대를 바라보는 인식론이자 세계관의 투영이라 말할 수 있다. 그런 이분법의 세계는 역시 폭력적 당대 세계의 재현이며 구성물이다. 이 같은 세계 해석 앞에서 인물들은 어느 한쪽의 선택을 하지 못하고 경계인으로 내몰려 주춤거리는 모습으로 등장한다. 또한 그런 인물들이 선택할 수 있는 대단원이라는 것은 과거의 지표들이 분열된 상황 위에서 어떤 지향성도 드러내지 못하는 질문 층위의 열린 결말이라는 특징을 보인다. 해방 후의 혼란과 이데올로기 전쟁 그후의 정치적 준엄함과 빈곤 상태에서의 도덕적 해이는 그 어느 시대보다 당시 사회의 사정을 이해하고 작가의 형편을 헤아리는 것이 선행되어야 한다는 시대와 작가, 문학의 상관성에 대한 암시이다. 거기에 더해 다시금 지금 우리가 말하는 전후문학의 범주, 혹 그것이 지나치게 단일한 외형적 범주론은 아니었는가에 대해서 반복적으로 고민할 때 범주에 포섭되지 않거나 논해지지 않은 많은 작가들의 작품을 우리는 다시 볼 수 있다. 전망이라는 세계, 세계의 전망 부재라는 상황적 기반 위에서 실존주의적 경향과 허무주의적 경향의 작품들은 많은 이해를 획득하곤 하는 것이다. 이런 풍토 안에서 류주현은 생전 발표한 단편의 절반에 해당하는 작품들을 이 시기에 쏟아낸다. 전후문학 담론의 사상적 고민이나 실존에 대한 침잠 혹은 환멸로 인한 낭만으로의 도피 등 어느 하나의 굵은 주제에 포섭되지 않고 있는 류주현의 작품을, 작품 내 공통적인 지점들을 그 내용과 함께 짚어가며 그의 문학이 어느 지표에 매핑될 수 있을지 혹은 새로운 지표로의 성립 가능성을 획득할지 살피는 것을 목표로 이 작품들의 공통 분모로 이분법이라는 인식론을 읽어내고, 인물들이 경계인의 위치성을 가지는 점, 이런 인식론이 서사기법으로서 소설의 결말까지 연결되는 점을 파악함으로써 전후문학 담론이 아직 읽어내지 못한 류주현의 1950년대 작품 가치를 읽어내고자 한다.

영문 초록

The research on Ryu Ju-hyeon is paradoxically insufficient with hisvast work history. Regarding this artist, who is arguably included in the postwar generation's writers group but lacks evaluation and research compared to the quantitative and qualitative achievement of the work, this paper starts with the question of why Ryu Ju-hyeon stood on the periphery in discussing postwar literature. Considering the circumstances of this period, which cannot be separated from personal experience, history, and the fact that Ryu Ju-hyeon's works are often out of the mainstream capture network makes me think again about the category of postwar literature. As an answer to the question, I would like to present the possibility of independent interpretation of the work itself. As the starting point of the study, I would like to lay the foundation for research on Ryu Ju-hyeon's literature by selecting and interpreting works that can be analyzed in common subject words among works in the 1950s, which can be said to be the beginning of the work. During this period, Ryu Ju-hyeon's characters commonly recognize the world through dichotomous planning, which can be said to be an epistemology and a projection of the worldview that the author looks at the time. The world of such dichotomy is also a reproduction and composition of the violent contemporary world. In the face of such a world interpretation, the characters appear hesitating as boundaries and hesitating with worries instead of choosing either side. In addition, the great unit that such characters can choose is characterized by the form of an open ending at the level of questions that does not reveal any direction on the basis of the fragmented circumstances of the past. The confusion after liberation, the political severity after the ideological war, and the moral hazard in poverty are hints at the correlation between the era, writers, and literature, where understanding the circumstances of society at the time and understanding the writer's situation are preceded. In addition to that, we can see again the works of many artists who are not included in the category or discussed when we repeatedly think about the category of postwar literature, or whether it was too single an external category theory. On the contextual basis of the world of prospects and the absence of prospects in the world, works of existential and nihilistic tendencies often acquire a lot of understanding. In this climate, Ryu Ju-hyeon pours out half of his short stories during this period. Ryu Ju-hyeon's works, which are not included in a bold subject such as ideological concerns, invasion of existence, or escape to romance due to disillusionment, read the theory that they are a dichotomy of the common denominator of the works, and read the value of the novel in the 1950s.
