국문 초록

엘리엇과 브래들리의 ‘무매개경험’은 주체가 세상을 경험하는 원재료로서 이 경험을 원재료로 하는 인식은 관계적 영역에서 일어나는 현상으로 시간과 공간이 개입하는 것은 물론이고 인간이 가진 여러 감각, 인식 장치가 그 형성에 작용한다. 무매개경험과 관계적 인식을 이어주는 개념들로 ‘유한중심’ ‘관점’ ‘느낌’ 그리고 ‘자기’와 같은 말이 등장한다. 이 개념들은 주로 무매개경험이 개인적인 차원에서 발생하는 일이고 그렇기에 세상을 이해하는 문제에 있어 개인적인 한계와 차이가 발생한다는 견해를 내포한다. 충분한 수의 개인적인 관점들이 동의하는 바가 현실세계에서 진실 혹은 실제(real)가 된다고 엘리엇과 브래들리는 보았다. 이 같은 상대주의적 입장은 그들이 기본적으로 상정한 관념적인 세계관과 일치하지 않는다. 종교적인 믿음이나 의식수행과 같은 전통적인 세계관과 경험적이며 물질적인 세계관이 충돌하는 것은 당시의 흔한 일이었다. 이 같은 복합적인 세계관은 당시 태동하던 과학적인 방법론을 기초로 하는 신학문인 심리학에서도 나타난다. 특별히 융의 분석심리학은 형이상학적이며 신비적 관점을 심리학 범주 안에서 다루고 있다.

영문 초록

For F. H. Bradley and T. S. Eliot, ‘immediate experience’ is a raw material for knowledge, and also that no medium intervenes a subject and the world in its occurrence. This experience consequently forms knowledge, which involves the perceptual and conceptual faculties of humanity in the setting of time and space and cannot carry the experience in its whole. This gap between immediate experience and knowledge necessitates a number of calibrated terms which would bridge the two. F. H. Bradley and T. S. Eliot adopted for their reasoning such useful terms as ‘finite center,’ ‘point of view,’ ‘feeling,’ and ‘self.’ Basically immediate experience occurs to individuals and they form different, not transcendable, ideas on the world. Bradley and Eliot share the notion that it depends on a sufficient number of agreements among points of view whether a certain view is real or not. This is a relativistic attitude and hardly in accord with their idealism, causing complications in understanding their views in consistent ways. This amalgamated posture between materialism and idealism is also found in C. G. Jung’s analytical psychology, which depends substantiality on theoretical and reflective methods for its main themes. Jung attempts to introduce religious and other traditional beliefs and practices in his officially scientific discipline of psychology. Jung and Eliot show the conflicts between traditional values and scientific ways their generations found hard to avoid.
