국문 초록

이 연구는 T. S. 엘리엇의 초기 시를 쥬디스 버틀러의 젠더 수행성과 젠더 우울증 개념을 기반으로 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 버틀러의 『젠더 트러블』에서 제시된 젠더 수행성에 따르면 젠더는 한 개인의 내적이고 본질적인 중심을 표현한 것이 아니라 제스처, 옷 입는 방법 등과 같은 행위에 의해 구성된다. 젠더는 반복되고 축적되며 그렇게 해서 응축되어서 자연적인 것처럼 보이게 된다. 버틀러는 젠더 우울증을 젠더화된 정체성의 “절대로-절대로 구조” 혹은 동성애 부인에 대한 “절대로-절대로 구조”라고 불렀다. ｢프루프록의 연가｣, ｢여인의 초상｣같은 엘리엇의 초기 시를 젠더 수행성 개념을 통해 살펴볼 때 시의 화자들이 기대되는 젠더 역할들을 수행하려고 하지만 실패하고 여성과의 관계 형성도 실패한다. 일부 비평가들은 엘리엇의 작품을 동성애 관점에서 살펴보았고, 라모스는 엘리엇 작품에서 발견되는 애가적 특징에 동성애적인 의미가 엮여 있다고 주장하였다. 이런 애가적 특징은 엘리엇의 초기 작품, 특히 『황무지』 4부 ｢수사｣에서 나타나고 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines T. S. Eliot’s early poetry in terms of Judith Butler’s gender performativity and gender melancholy. According to gender performativity in Butler’s Gender Trouble, gender doesn’t express the internal and essential core in a person, but is constructed by action such as gesture, how to wear and so on. Gender is repeated, accumulated, and congealed, and thus it seems to be natural. Butler calls gender melancholy “the never-never structure” of gendered identity or “the never-never structure of homosexual disavowal. When we examine Eliot’s early poetry such as “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” “Portrait of a Lady” through using the concept of gender performativity, we can find that the speakers of his poetry try to perform the expected gender roles, but fail to perform them and form the relationship with women. Some critics examine Eliot’s works in terms of homoeroticism and Colleen Lamos argues that the elegiac mode found in Eliot’s works is woven with the homosexual nuances. This kind of elegiac mode is found in his early works, especially “Death by Water” of The Waste Land.
