국문 초록

통상 사회복지실천 영역에서의 돌봄 서비스 제공자는 여성이 주를 이루었기 때문에 남성 사회복지사에 대한 사회적 관심은 저조한 편이었다. 본 연구는 돌봄 서비스를 제공하는 남성 사회복지사의 클라이언트와의 실천관계 경험에 관해 본질적 의미를 탐구하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 총 5명의 돌봄 서비스를 제공하는 남성 사회복지사와 1인당 3회 정도 개별 심층면담을 하고, 자료를 Giorgi의 기술적 현상학적 질적 연구방법으로 분석했다. 연구결과는 본질적 주제 5개, 드러난 주제 14개 그리고 대주제와 함께 밝혀졌다. 구체적으로, 본질적 주제는 ‘넓은 활동 반경 안에서 살뜰히 챙기는 클라이언트’, ‘성별 고정관념에 가로막혀 애먹는 클라이언트와의 실천관계’, ‘사회적 남성성과 조화 이루며 클라이언트에게 다가가려는 노력’, ‘실천관계의 평안 깨뜨리는 클라이언트의 남성 사회복지사 향한 도전’, ‘실천관계 끝나도 아름드리 고목 되어 응원하는 클라이언트의 앞길’과 같았다. 대주제는 ‘남성 사회복지사를 둘러싼 견고한 편견에도 클라이언트 위해 견디는 실천관계의 무게’였다. 결론적으로, 연구결과에 기반을 두어 돌봄 서비스를 제공하는 남성 사회복지사에 관한 저평가된 사회적 인식 개선, 클라이언트와의 실천관계 관련 이론과 교육의 내용 보완, 소진 방지 측면에서의 심리정서적 지원방안 등을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

As most care providers in social work practice are females, little attention has been paid to male social workers. This study aimed to explore the essential meaning of the experience of male social workers providing care services regarding their practical relationships with clients. For this, one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted with five male social workers providing care services; the interviews involved three sessions per person, and the interview data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological, and qualitative research methods. The analysis led to identifying 5 essential topics, 14 revealed topics, and the main topic. The essential topics included, ‘carefully caring for the client in the wide scope of movement,’ ‘interference in practice relationship with the client due to gender bias,’ ‘efforts to approach the client in harmony with social masculinity,’ ‘challenges to male social workers from client disturbing the peaceful practice relationship,’ and ‘providing consistent and solid support for the client’s future even after the end of the practical relationships.’ The main topic was, ‘the heavy weight of practical relationships endured by male social workers for the client, despite social prejudices against male social workers.’ Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that social perception about male social workers, who provide care services but are not fairly recognized for their work, should be improved and the contents of theories and education on their practical relationships with clients need further development. This study also suggests measures to offer psychological and emotional support for male social workers to prevent burnout.
