국문 초록

엘리엇의 마지막 시 리틀 기딩은 황무지로부터 시작된 그의 영적 여행의 마지막 종착지라 할 수 있다. 신들의 성스러움과 상징과 신화로부터 단절된 근대 산업사회의 도시인들은 이미 영적으로 죽어있다. 엘리엇은 글쓰기를 통해 그의 영적 여행을 시작한다. 이 순례는 미르체아 엘리아데의 관점으로 볼 때, 속된 것으로부터 성스러운 것으로의 이동이다. 인간은 본질적으로 잃어버린 낙원에 대한 강한 향수를 가지고 있다. 에덴에서 추방된 인간은 신을 중심으로 한 우주의 유기체적 네트워크에서 떨어져 버렸기 때문에 영적 생명력을 상실해 버리고 속된 세상에서 의미를 잃은 채 살고 있다. 그러나 속된 세상에서도 인간은 비균질성의 성스러운 공간과 시간의 상징을 통해 신현을 체험하고 성스러운 차원에 도달 할 수 있다. 엘리엇은 먼저 리틀 기딩에서 대극의 합일을 보고, 원소들의 죽음을 통해서 신현을 체험한다. 그리고 그는 신현을 통해 성스러운 경지에 이르게 되고, 독일 폭격기가 불을 뿜으면서 런던을 폭파하는 장면을 하늘로부터 성령이 비둘기처럼 내려오는 장면과 마가의 다락방에 불과 함께 성령이 강림한 장면을 중첩시킨다. 가장 속된 것을 통해 가장 성스러움을 본 것이다. 이것을 통해 그는 세상에서의 성스러움은 성과속의 변증법을 통해 얻어진다는 사실을 깨닫는다.

영문 초록

“Little Gidding” can be regarded as the final destination of his spiritual journey, which had started at The Waste Land. Like the crowd in the unreal city in the earlier work, the urban people are regarded as spiritually dead, for they are cut off from the sacred gods and symbols, living in the modern industrial cities. Eliot started his spiritual journey through writing. His writing journey, from the perspective of Mircea Eliade, can be interpreted as a move from the profane to the sacred. Human beings intrinsically have a strong nostalgia for the paradise that God expelled them from. They live in the profane world with no access to the true meaning of life because they are separated from the universal organic networks after they were expelled from the Eden. According to Eliade, they can transcend the profane, by experiencing theophany through the symbols of the sacred space and time, and can reach the sacred dimension. First, seeing the union of the opposites in “Little Gidding” and then experiencing the death of four elements: earth, air, water, and fire, Eliot encounters a compound ghost, a kind of experiencing theophany. After meeting the ghost, Eliot finally reaches the sacred dimension and realizes that the sacred can be reached only through the dialectic of the sacred and the profane.
