양자역학적 관점에서 고찰한 번트 노턴

국문 초록

우주 근원에 대한 철학적 물음은 인류역사의 시작과 더불어 시작되었고 이러한 물음에 대한 답들은 대체로 형이상학적이었다. 그러나 최근 과학의 발달로 급격히 변화되어 가고 있는 포스트모더니즘 시대에서는 그동안의 형이상학적이었던 물음에 대한 새로운 접근방식이 요망된다고 할 수 있다. 시간과 영원, 그리고 우주 근원과 같은 철학적 의미가 내포된 엘리엇의 네 사중주 중 제1부 번트 노턴을 과학에 기초된 양자역학과 인도의 고전 우파니샤드의 진리들을 적용하여 새로운 관점으로 파악하여 보았다. 그 결과 번트 노턴에서 표현된 우주의 근원인 시적 등가물인 정점과, 헤라클레이토스의 로고스, 기독교의 하느님, 우파니샤드의 브라만과 아트만 그리고 옴, 양자역학의 통일장과 같은 근원적 원리들이 결국 조화된 하나로 통일되는 것임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 근원에 대한 진리 탐구의 목표는 궁극적으로 시간 안에서 영원성을 발견하는 것이며, 그 결과로 체득된 지혜는 살아가고 있는 현상을 새로이 바라보고, 인간의 행복한 삶에 적용하는 것이라 할 수 있겠다. 엘리엇의 네 사중주도 이러한 관점을 염두에 둔 것이 분명하며, 본 논문의 연구 목적도 그러한 것이다.

영문 초록

Philosophical questions about the origin of the universe began with the beginning of human history. Possible answers to these questions have been discussed from various perspectives and most of them have been of metaphysical nature. In this post-modern era, our circumstances, both mental and physical, are changing quickly with phenomenal advances in science and technology. The answers to those philosophical and metaphysical questions should keep abreast with the pace of the changes and the living conditions brought about by them. This understanding has led me to attempt to apply the quantum mechanics and Hindu classical literature, Upanishad, to these questions which eventually encompass time, eternity, and the cosmic origin in T. S. Eliot’s “Burnt Norton.” I find that Heraclitus’ Logos, the still point in “Burnt Norton,” Brahman, Atman and Aum in Upanishad and the unified field of quantum mechanics have much in common as an effort to understand the most fundamental of the universe. The purpose of pursuing these questions is ultimately to grope for the possibility of transcending the limit of physical existence and with the wisdom we might be allowed we could view our world on a different dimension. With this new understanding we might be able to picture a better life, individual and collective alike. Eliot might have had an identical or at least similar idea or intention when he composed “Burnt Norton.”
