‘인간 극복’과 니체의 트랜스휴머니즘

국문 초록

인간의 자기 극복을 역설한 니체가 트랜스휴머니즘의 선구자로 인식되고 있다. 생명공학, 유전공학, 나노공학, 로봇공학으로 대변되는 현대의 막강한 기술권력은 자연환경뿐만 아니라 인간의 본성마저 변화시키고자 한다. 기존의 인간조건을 극복할 수 있는 인간향상 기술을 통해 인간은 더 이상 자연에 의해 지배받지 않고 오히려 자연의 지배자가 되는 포스트휴먼 단계를 기술적, 윤리적으로환영하는 사람들은 스스로를 트랜스휴머니즘이라고 부른다. 일련의 트랜스휴머니스트들은 인간의 자기극복을 역설한 니체와 인간 조건의 기술적 극복을 추구하는 트랜스휴머니즘 사이에 피상적 수준에서 근본적 차원에 이르기까지의 유사성이 있다고 주장한다. 이 글은 트랜스휴머니즘의 아이디어들이 니체에게서직접적으로 영향을 받았다고 주장하는 입장들을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 니체가 정말 트랜스휴머니즘의 선구자인가를 검증하고자 한다. 여기서 우리는 인간향상과 기술을 결합시키는 ‘기술적 트랜스휴머니즘’과 지상에서의 존재의 의미를 향상시키고자 하는 니체의 ‘도덕적 휴머니즘’을 구별한다. 기술적 트랜스휴머니즘은 니체의 위버멘쉬를 과학과 기술을 통해 만들어질 수 있는 존재로 파악함으로써 니체가 주장하는 인간극복의 도덕적 의미를 간과한다. 영원회귀 사상과본질적으로 결합되어 있는 니체의 위버멘쉬 사상은 오히려 21세기의 기술적 트랜스휴머니즘을 비판적으로 고찰할 수 있는 관점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

I am focusing here on the main issues that have been recently raised and disputed concerning the relationship between Nietzsche’s thought of the overman(Übermensch) and transhumanism. Transhumanism is a loosely defined movement or a new attitude of mind that is welcoming the new technologies enhancing human mental and physical capacities, combating diseases and slowing down the process of aging, and exercising control over moods and mental states. Transhumanists believe that it is possible and desirable to improve human nature by means of technology. Some transhumanists maintain that significant similarities can be found between the concept of the posthuman, as put forward by transhumanists, and Nietzsche’s concept of the overman. But some transhumanists reject Nietzsche as an ancesteor of the transhumanists movement. The discussion of human enhancement or overcoming the human remains, in my view, confounded by a failure to distinguish important concepts. What does it mean to overcome the human? Nietzsche had actually little to say about technology as a means of self-overcoming. When Nietzsche comes to say about the human enhancement, it is beyond doubt that he means it morally concerning the meaning of life. If we can agree that the technological enhancement of our capacities doesn’t automatically make the human better, we have to distinguish Nietzsche’s moral transhumanism and the technological transhumanism. In addition, I argue that Nietzschean concept of the human enhancement provides us rather a critical viewpoint to see the limit of the technological transhumanism.
