니체와 야누스적 근대

국문 초록

지금까지 니체와 근대에 관한 논의는 흔히 니체의 사유가 근대에 속하는지 혹은 탈근대에 속하는지를 중심으로 해왔고 이러한 논의는 근대와 탈근대에 대한 우리들 자신의 규정에 의거한다. 이 글에서 필자는 관심의 방향을 돌려 니체 자신이 파악한 근대의 특징과 그것에 대한 니체의 입장에 주목한다. 니체에 따르면 신의 죽음과 함께 시작된 근대는 유럽인들이 오랜 진리 추구의 결과 근대 과학의 힘을 통해 비극적 진리, 즉 삶이 필연적으로 가상을 필요로 한다는 진리에 도달하게 된 시대이다. 이 진리는 세계의 성격을 생성으로 파악하고 모든 가치들의 창조된 성격을 주장한다는 점에서 이론적 니힐리즘이기도 하다. 니체는 이 이론적 니힐리즘이 근대인들에게서 어떤 결과를 낳을지에 대해 커다란 관심을 기울였다. 저 인식은 고대 그리스인들처럼 강한 자들에게서는 최고의 위대한 문화를 낳을 수 있지만 약자들에게서는 절망과 파괴, 혼돈의 실천적 니힐리즘으로 이어질 수 있기 때문이다. 즉 니체가 보기에 근대는 가능성과 위험성을 동시에 품은 야누스적 존재이며 상반된 미래를 향해 열려 있다. 하지만 그는 곧 근대인들이 위대함의 가능성을 뒤로 하고 커다란 재앙을 향해 나아가고 있음을 깨닫는다. 이로부터 위버멘쉬를 비롯한 구원적 인간들에 대한 니체의 열망, 그리고 반대로 의지의 나약함을 노정하는 근대인들과 근대의 제 조류들에 대한 신랄한 비판이 나온다.

영문 초록

Hitherto most discussions about Nietzsche and modernity were centered on the question of whether Nietzsche’s thought belongs to modernity or to post-modernity, of which definitions are definitely ours. Thus, in this work,we turn to Nietzsche’s own conception of modernity, how he conceived his time and what his attitude towards it was. According to Nietzsche, modernity is characterized by the tragic knowledge that life needs illusions to preserve itself. He knows that Socratism as the precursor of the modern Alexandrian culture had denied the Dionysian wisdom. However, Nietzsche claims, pursuing the unconditional knowledge-drive, it ironically arrived at the very Dionysian wisdom through the means of science itself. Nietzsche was interested in the effects of this newly acquired tragic knowledge on modern men, fully acknowledging that it could result in a new happiness or a terrible disaster. That is,according to Nietzsche, modernity is Janus-faced, opening humanity both to the great possibility and to the great danger. Soon Nietzsche concludes that the modern men are walking towards a disaster leaving behind the possibility of creating a great culture. We can understand from this Nietzsche’s increasing passion for the redeeming men like Übermensch and his acute criticism of modern men and modern currents which shows the lack of will and the lack of power for responsibility.
