국문 초록

일제 시기 일본인에 의해 설립된 ‘조선불교단’은 조선불교의 어용화와 더불어 친일 조선인을 양성시킨 대표적인 친일단체로 규정되어 왔다. 특히, ‘조선불교단’의 전폭적인 경제적 지원하에 일본유학을 떠난 조선인 포교유학생은 일본불교를 모방하고 전통불교와 계율불교를 파탄시킨, 나아가 대처승이라는 수식어마저 탄생시킨 ‘친일’의 대표적 표상이었다. 하지만 아이러니하게도 그들의 행보에 대해서는 지금까지 구체적으로 살펴본 연구가 없다. 포교유학생의 실태조차 제대로 파악되고 있지 않은 것이다. 그렇다면 그들의 어떠한 행적을 ‘친일행위’라 볼 수 있는 것일까? 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식하에 조선불교단의 ‘포교유학생’을 중심으로 그들의 실태와 동향에 대해 조선불교단에서 간행한 『조선불교』 잡지를 중심으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 이 글에서 살펴본 조선불교단의 포교유학생들은 오늘날 ‘친일-항일’의 이분법적인 인식으로 설명할 수 없는 다양한 친일 양상을 보이고 있었다. 이처럼 여전히 ‘친일-항일’이 근대 한국의 불교계를 논하는 데 있어 필수불가결한 담론이 되고 있는 가운데, 이 글은 조선불교단의 포교유학생을 대상으로 친일 의미에 대한 새로운 논의의 가능성을 제공했다 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

‘Joseon Buddhist Association’ can be defined as a representative pro-Japanese group that made Joseon Buddhism serve the government and trained the Pro-Japanese Joseon people. Especially, Joseon students who left for Japan to study and propagate Buddhism under the full support of the ‘Joseon Buddhist Association’ have become a representative emblem of ‘Japanophilism,’ which even gave birth to a modifier of a married Buddhist priest who imitated Japanese Buddhism and ruined the traditional Buddhism and Dharma Buddhism. But ironically, there have been few studies that concretely investigated their activities. Even the actual state of ‘Joseon students who propagated Buddhism in Japan’ is not well understood. Then, what activities of them at the time could be regarded as ‘pro-Japanese activities’? Taking this question into consideration, this study would discuss the actual state and trend of ‘Joseon students who propagated Buddhism’ from the Joseon Buddhist Association through the magazine Joseon Buddhism, published by the Joseon Buddhist Association. Through this, this study would draw the meaning and aspect of pro-Japanese activities of the Joseon Buddhist Association and ‘Joseon students who studied and propagated Buddhism’ concretely.
