전통극에 나타난 장애 이미지에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

탈춤은 다양한 인간군상에 대한 이야기와 소재를 가지며 해학과 풍자성, 그리고 상징적인 이미지와 함께 현대에서는 지역문화 콘텐츠로서 부각 되고 있지만, 탈춤에 등장하는 인물들의 묘사에는 장애를 개인의 결함으로 보고 생기는 장애의 고정관념과 이미지로 인해 장애인의 삶을 왜곡하고 사회적 통념을 그대로 표현하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 예술적 요소로 승화하여 전통문화를 계승하고 있는 전통극 중 탈춤을 중심으로 장애의 모습이 재현화 되는 것을 살펴보고 장애 이미지에 대하여 논의해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 연구방법으로는 문헌분석을 하였으며 탈춤과 관련한 문헌 중 8편을 분석한 결과 첫째, 장애이미지 재현이 순환으로 이어지지 않도록 편견의 고리를 끊어내는 것이 진정한 전통의 계승이다. 둘째, 문화상호성을 통해 우리만의 독특한 미학을 보여주며 전통적 계승에도 변화가 있어야 한다. 셋째, 전통적 내용에 대한 장애학적 관점의 새로운 해석이 필요하다. 넷째, 전통극 탈춤 계승자들의 장애인식 개선이 필요하다. 이런 문제제기를 통해 전통문화 계승에 있어서 시대정신에 맞는 성숙한 발전이 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Although the traditional mask dances have stories and materials about various groups of people and are highlighted as local culture contents with humor, satire and symbolic images in modern times, the descriptions of the disabled appearing in mask dances distort the lives of them, based on the stereotypes and the images of them, and straightly express the social myths about them, as they recognize the disabilities as flaws of individuals. This study, therefore, aims to examine the reproduction of disabilities and discuss the images of them, around mask dances, among the traditional plays which have succeed the traditional culture, as they sublimated into artistic factors. To this end, it analyzed 8 kinds of literature regarding mask dances. The findings are as follows: First, It is the authentic tradition succession that breaks off the vicious cycle of bias, to circulate the reproduction of images of disabilities. Second, it is necessary to make a change in even the traditional succession, exhibiting our own aesthetics. Third, it is necessary to newly interpret the traditional contents from a perspective of disability studies. Fourth, it is necessary to improve mask dance successors’ perceptions on disabilities. By raising such questions, it expects mature development of the traditional culture, corresponding to the spirit of the age, in succeeding it.
