국문 초록

본고의 목적은 자신의 부족함을 인정하고 자신보다 뛰어난 능력과 자질을가진 사람이라면 그가 어떤 출신이나 철학을 가졌더라도 그를 등용하여 국가와 국민을 위해 일을 하도록 만든 조지 워싱턴 대통령의 리더십의 본질을 살펴보는 것이다. 조지 워싱턴은 재정 문제에 있어서는 자신보다 뛰어난 해밀턴을 통해, 외교 문제에 있어서는 자신보다 뛰어난 제퍼슨을 통해 신생 국가운영에 있어 가장 중요한 두 문제를 해결하는 초석을 다졌다. 본고는 해밀턴과 제퍼슨을 각각 주인공으로 하는 연구나 이들 두 사람의갈등과 경쟁을 주로 다룬 기존 연구들이 상당 부분 간과하고 지나간 영역 – 두 사람과 조지 워싱턴 대통령과의 상관관계 – 에 초점을 맞추었다. 우리는이를 통해 자신을 비우고 그 자리에 자신보다 우수한 사람들의 역량으로 채울 줄 알았던 조지 워싱턴 리더십의 진면목을 확인할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 또한 시간이 지나면서 악화되어간 제퍼슨과의 관계에서 개인적인 서운함보다무엇이 국익에 도움이 되는지를 우선한 조지 워싱턴의 공공성을 확인할 수있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to appreciate the essence of the leadership of President Washington, who acknowledged his lacks and made anyone with abilities and qualities superior to himself, no matter what origin or philosophy, appoint him to work for the country and the people. Through Hamilton, who excelled himself in financial matters, and Jefferson, who excelled in foreign affairs, Washington laid the groundwork for solving two of the most important problems in running the new nation. This paper focuses on an area – the correlation between the two men and President Washington – that has largely been overlooked by studies with Hamilton and Jefferson as the main characters or existing studies that mainly dealt with the conflict and rivalry between the two. Through this, I think we will be able to confirm the true nature of the Washington leadership, who thought to empty himself and fill the position with the capabilities of people superior to him. In addition, in the relationship with Jefferson, which has deteriorated over time, the public nature of Washington, which prioritizes what serves the national interest rather than personal dissatisfation, can be confirmed.(Konyang University)
