무령왕의 生涯를 통해 본 백제와 왜

국문 초록

이 글은 『日本書紀』에 기록된 무령왕 관련 기록을 중심으로 왜와의 관계 속에서 출생 당시의 시대적 배경과 출자문제, 그리고 즉위과정과 즉위 후 대왜정책 등에 대해 검토한 것이다. 백제는 주로 군사적인 목적으로 왜와의 교류를 추진하였는데, 아신왕대 이후부터는 王族外交로 특징되고 있다. 곤지는 개로왕대 고구려의 남진에 대응하기 위한 군사적 필요성과 왜에 보냈던 왕족 여성의 비위문제로 인해 틀어진 양국의 관계회복을 위해 파견되었다. 그런데 곤지는 왜에 장기간 머무르게 될 상황에 대비해 개로왕의 임신한 부인을 요구하였다. 그녀가 왜에서 출산하게 되면 그들을 인질로 두고 자신은 조기에 귀국할 수 있는 명분을 얻을 수 있었기 때문이다. 그렇지만 왜로 가는 도중에 무령왕이 출생함으로써 그의 의도는 실현되지 못하였다. 무령왕의 出自에 대해서는 다양한 견해가 있지만 『日本書紀』의 기록에 구체성이 있고, 당시의 정국 상황과도 부합된다는 점에서 개로왕의 親子로 보는 것이 타당하다. 그리고 무령왕은 461년에 태어나 백제에서 성장하였다. 무령왕은 동성왕의 실정으로 정변을 일으킨 國人들의 추대를 받아 왕위에 올랐는데, 국인의 핵심은 왕족이었다. 무령왕은 즉위 후 한강유역에 대한 회복과 경제기반 확대를 위한 노력과 함께 가야지역에 대한 적극적인 진출을 시도하였는데, 이 과정에서 왜와의 외교적 관계를 적극적으로 활용하였다. 무령왕대 왜와의 관계는 『日本書紀』의 내용을 비롯해 태자 순타, 隅田八幡神社 인물화상경 등을 통해 파악해 볼 수 있다. 무령왕대 왜는 武烈에서 繼體로 왕조가 이행하였는데, 특히 계체시대에 백제와 매우 긴밀한 관계가 형성되었다. 계체천황은 즉위 후 선제적으로 백제에 사신을 파견하였으며, 무령왕은 왕족을 비롯해 사신과 학자 등을 자주 파견하여 선진적인 문물을 전해주었다. 특히 왜에 거주하고 있었던 무령왕의 親母와 무령왕 즉위 이전에 보내진 장자 순타는 왜와의 관계에서 중요한 역할을 하였을 것으로 추정된다.

영문 초록

This paper puts an in-depth study on the historical background of the lifetime of Muryeong focusing on the records of his birth, pedigree, enthronement, and the relation to Wa which is written in the book of Nihonshoki. Baekje had a strategy of promoting exchanges with Wa for military purposes with characteristics of the royal family involved in diplomatic affairs since the Asin Dynasty. Gonji was dispatched to restore the relationship between the two countries that was distorted due to the military necessity and corruption issues of a royal woman sent to Wa in responding to the southward advance of Goguryeo during the age of King Gaero. However, Gonji asked for King Gaero's pregnant wife in preparation for a long-term stay in Wa. This was because if she had given birth in Wa, it would have made it possible for him to return to his home country sooner while keeping her and her child hostage. Contrary to his plan, King Muryeong was born on his way to Wa so he didn’t realize it. There are various opinions and views on the pedigree of King Muryeong, and it is reasonable to regard him as a biological child of King Gaero in that it is specific in the record of the book of Nihonshoki in terms of the political situation at the time. It is reasonable to assume that King Muryeong was born in 461 and grew up in Baekje. King Muryeong ascended to the throne under the political upheaval of the people caused by King Dongseong’s misconduct and the royal family played a key role in this. King Muryeong attempted to actively advance into the Gaya region along with efforts to restore the Han River basin and expand the economic base after his ascension, and actively utilized diplomatic relations with the Wa in this process. The relation to Wa during the age of King Muryeong was described in the book of Nihonshoki along with historical materials regarding the crown prince Sunta and the painted person-shaped mirror from the Wujeonpalbun shrine. There was a dynasty transition from Muyeol to Keitai in Wa during the age of King Muryeong and a very close relationship with Baekje was formed during the Keitai dynasty. The emperor Keitai preemptively dispatched envoys to Baekje after his ascension and King Muryeong frequently dispatched envoys and scholars including royal families to deliver advanced cultural relics. Particularly, it is assumed that King Muryeong's biological mother, who was living in Wa and Sunta, the eldest son sent before King Muryeong's ascension, played a significant role in the relationship with the Wa.
