국문 초록

본 연구는 기업이 직면하고 있는 기업 수준의 경쟁 정도가 기업의 위험프리미엄에 미치는 영향에 대해 검토하고자 한다. 경쟁이 기업에 미치는 영향에 대한 선행연구 결과는 부정적인 영향과 긍정적인 영향이 혼재되어 있는데, 경쟁이 심할수록 기업의 수익성 악화 및 변동성 증가로 인해 부정적인 영향이 초래된다고 보고하는 선행연구도 있고, 경쟁 환경이 기업의 외부 기업지배구조 역할을 하여 경영진으로 하여금 효율성 개선에 대한 노력을 하게 만든다는 긍정적인 영향을 보고하는선행연구도 있다. Li et al.(2013)에 의해 개발된 기업 수준의 경쟁 변수를 이용하여 실증 분석한결과, 경쟁이 치열해질수록 기업의 위험프리미엄이 감소함을 확인하였다. 이는 기업이 직면한 경쟁이 기업의 외부 기업지배구조 역할을 하여 경영진으로 하여금 좀 더 효율적으로 기업을 운영케 하여 기업의 자본비용을 낮춘다는 주장을 뒷받침하는 결과이다. 선행연구에서 기업이 직면한 경쟁환경을 대리하기 위하여 오랫동안 널리 활용되고 있는 산업 수준의 경쟁 변수를 동시에 넣고 분석을 해도 결과는 동일하였다. 또한 기업의 성장 수준에 따라 세 그룹으로 나누어 기업 수준의 경쟁과 위험프리미엄을 분석해도 여전히 기업이 처한 경쟁이 치열해질수록 기업의 위험프리미엄이 감소함을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines whether a firm-level competition perceived by a firm affects its implied risk premium. Prior literature based on an industry-level competition provides a mixed result of the effect of competition on a firm’s implied risk premium as well as it’s performance. While some studies report a negative effect of competition on a firm by showing that the firm’s profitability is low and volatile in the competitive environment, others provide an positive evidence that competition pressure enforces discipline on managers to reduce slack and increase firm’s operating efficiency. The results of an analysis using a new measure developed by Li et al.(2013) as a proxy for the firm-level competition indicate that, even after controlling for several determinants of risk premium and some properties of analysts’ forecasts, the implied risk premium has a significant negative relationship with firm-level competition and that this relationship was robust to inclusion of industry-level competition in the model and across a variety of growth groups. These results provide support for the view that competition pressure enforces discipline on managers to reduce slack and maximize profits.
