재벌기업의 연구개발투자 비대칭성에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 대규모기업집단에 소속된 기업의 연구개발투자에 대한 원가 비대칭성을 검증하였다. 기업의 연구개발투자는 기업의 장기적인 성장과 생존을 결정하는 척도이며, 특히 4차 산업 관련 혁신의 중요성이 대두되면서 기업의 연구개발투자에 대한 중요성은 날로 커지고 있다. 우리나라 기업들도 이러한 추세에 따라 매출액 대비 연구개발투자에 대한 비중이 늘리고 있다. 따라서 본연구에서는 우리나라 경제의 특수한 형태인 재벌기업에서 연구개발투자에 대한 자원조정이 어떻게이루어지고 있는지 원가 비대칭성 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 2001년부터 2014년까지 유가증권시장 및 코스닥시장에 상장된 기업 자료를 이용하여 재벌기업 여부와 연구개발투자의 원가 비대칭성 간의 관계를 실증 분석한 결과, 재벌기업이 비재벌기업에 비해 연구개발투자에 대해 하방경직적인 원가행태를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 나아가, 재벌기업의 연구개발투자에 대한 하방경직성이2008년 글로벌 금융위기 이후 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타나는데, 이는 재벌기업의 경우 외부 충격에도 불구하고 그룹 내부자원을 활용하여 연구개발투자를 유지할 수 있는 능력이 있기 때문에 연구개발투자에 대한 하방경직성이 나타나는 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

R&D investment is critical for growth, survival and success of the firm since it can be a source of a firm’s innovation and competitive advantage. Due the recent technological revolution, many Korean firms have increased the ratio of R&D expenditure to sales revenue and, the growing importance of R&D investments motivates us to investigate how firms manage and adjust R&D expenditure with respect to changes in sales. We use asymmetric cost model to find whether there are asymmetric frictions in making adjustments on R&D investments. Meanwhile, the unique feature among Korean firms is the existence of a large business group or a chaebol and, the different traits of chaebol and non-chaebol firms may drive different cost behavior. Therefore, the research objective of this paper is to investigate whether chaebol and non-chaebol firms in Korea exhibit different R&D cost behavior. Based on a dataset of Korean listed firms from 2001 to 2014, we find that the degree of R&D cost stickiness is on average, greater in chaebol firms than in non-chaebol firms. Further, we find that the R&D cost stickiness in chaebol firms is more pronounced in post-global financial crisis in 2008. Chaebol firms face political costs which pressure them to maintain the certain level of investments by the government or media and thus, such costs may prevent them from reducing R&D investments in response to sales decreases or economic downturns thus, exhibit stickiness. To further extent, chaebol firms may have internal resources, which allow them to maintain their level of R&D investments. Our findings enhance the understandings of how chaebol firms manage R&D investments in response to negative shocks such as sales declines and economic downturns compared to non-chaebol firms.
