조르주 캉귈렘의 의철학에서 ‘정상성(normalité)’ 개념

국문 초록

20세기 프랑스 생명과학철학과 의철학(philosophie des sciences de la vie et de la sante)을 대표하는 조르주 캉귈렘(Georges Canguilhem, 1904-1995) 은 의학의 핵심 개념인 ‘정상(normal)’과 ‘병리(pathologique)’ 개념을 재정립하여, 정상과 병리의 통상적인 관계와 위상, 즉 정상이 병리에 선행하고 정상이 병리의 토대라는 견해를 전복시킨 인물로 잘 알려져 있다. 무엇보다도 캉귈렘은 지난 수세기 동안 철학과 과학에서 너무나도 당연하게 전제되었던 생명체와 인간의 ‘정상성(normalite)’ 개념에 대해 근본적으로 의문을 제기하고, ‘정상성’ 개념의 의미를 철학, 생명과학, 의학의 다른 주요한 개념들과의 관계 속에서 새롭게 규정했다. 캉귈렘의 의학박사학위 논문의 주제이기도 했던 생명체와 인간의 ‘정상성’ 개념은 당대는 물론이거니와 후대에도 그의 제자인 푸코(Michel Foucault, 1926-1984)를 비롯하여 수많은 철학자와 과학자에게 지대한 영향을 주었고, 그 영향은 오늘날에도 지속되고 있다. 그런데 그의 생명과학철학과 의철학에서 이렇게 중요한 기본 개념을 집중적으로 검토하고 정리한 연구는 국내외 모두에서 거의 찾아보기가 힘든 상황이다. 그래서 본 논문은 캉귈렘의 사유체계에서 중추적인 역할을 담당하며 또한 가장 독창적인 개념인 ‘정상성’을 분석해 보고자 한다. 본 논문은 먼저 생명체와 인간의 ‘정상성’ 개념을 네 개의 기본 특징, 즉 ‘관계성(relativite)’, ‘적응성(adaptabilite)’, ‘규범성(normativite)’, ‘주관성(subjectivite)’으로 규정하고, 이어서 이 기본 특징을 각각 생태학적 ‘환경(milieu)’ 개념, 진화론적 ‘적응(adaptation)’ 개념, 해부학적 ‘기형(monsruosite)’ 개념, 객관적 병리학의 불가능성에 대한 논의를 통해서 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 이렇게 함으로써 본 논문은 캉귈렘의 생명과학철학과 의철학을 보다 엄밀하게 이해해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Georges Canguilhem(1904-1995) is one of the major figures of the philosophy of life science and medicine in the twentieth-century France. He is well-known for having reestablished the concept of ‘normal’ and ‘pathological’ in order to subvert the accepted relation and status of these two concepts: that is the normal precedes the pathological, and consequently the normal is foundation of the pathological. Above all, he expressed a doubt on the concept of normality in living beings and human beings, which philosophy and science assumed for centuries as evident. He then newly defined the meaning of normality in reference to other central concepts of philosophy, life science, and medicine. In fact, the concept of normality in living beings and human beings was not limited to the theme of his doctoral dissertation in medicine. Many philosophers and scientists including his disciple, Michel Foucault (1926-1984), were concerned about it and this interest continues right up to the present. Nevertheless, the studies mainly focusing on the concept of normality are rarely found both in Korea and overseas. This paper thus aims to analyze this most ingenious concept of Canguilhem, on which his system of thought relies heavily. To this end, the paper examines relativity, adaptability, normativity, and subjectivity as the basic features of normality in living beings and human beings. These features are subsequently discussed in more detail by reviewing such concepts as ecological milieu, evolutionary adaptation, anatomical deformity, and the impossibility of objective pathology. In this way, the paper attempts to arrive at a more precise understanding of Canguilhem’s philosophy of life science and medicine.
