국문 초록

『황무지』 전체를 관통하는 주제 ‘불모지가 되어버린 현대문명’의 저변에는 남녀문제가 있다. 특히, 『황무지』의 2부 「체스게임」에는 결혼한 부부간의 남녀문제가 깊이 있게 조명되고 있다. 체스게임을 하듯, 남자와 여자는 각각 자신의 이익에만 몰두하고 상대방을 사랑하거나 이해하려 하지 않고, 오히려 맞서 싸워 패퇴시켜야 할 적으로 간주한다. 클레오파트라, 테레우스, 릴 부부를 포함한 「체스게임」의 모든 캐릭터는 상대방을 정치적으로 궁지에 몰아넣거나, 처제를 강간하거나, 아내를 착취하며, 상대방에게 치명적인 타격을 입힌다. 자신의 요구나 욕망에 더 이상 소용이 없어지면 상대방을 버리거나 배신하는 일에 주저하지 않는다. 엘리엇이 현대문명에 대한 구원을 확신했는지는 분명하지 않으나, 『황무지』에는 재생의 모티프와 구원의 실험적 방법이 발견된다. 전자는 주로 물과 연결되며 후자는 윤리적 가치로서 제시되고 있다. 황무지에서 물은 오필리아와 플레바스의 경우처럼 재생을 상징할 뿐만 아니라 히아신스 정원 장면에서와 같이 남녀를 온전하게 연결하는 매개체이기도 하다. 남녀 화합의 문제는 형이상학적 차원의 우주 질서회복과 연결되어 있다. 이것은 우주가 음양의 조화로 운용된다는 동양철학의 사상을 연상시킨다. 「체스게임」에 등장하는 인물들은 이 초월적 섭리가 현상적 세계의 이면에서 작용한다는 사실을 깨닫지 못하고 있다.

영문 초록

The issue of disrupted harmony between the sexes is found at the bottom of The Waste Land. Modern civilization has become a barren or waste land, where men and women have lost the ability to interact harmoniously with each other in both mental and physical terms. When men and women concentrate only on their own interests, making no efforts to understand the other party, no fruition of their relationship is possible. As in a chess game, the other sex has become an enemy to fight against and defeat, instead of cultivating a mutually dependent and cooperative relationship, and ideally reaching a redemptive harmony. All the characters in “A Game of Chess” including Cleopatra, Tereus, and Lyl’s couple have caused their partners or spouses fatal blows, by cornering his partner politically, raping his sister-in-law, or exploiting his wife inhumanly. Unless their partners are of no avail for their own needs or desires, they show no hesitation in discarding or betraying the other party. It is not clear whether Eliot was sure of a salvation of the waste land but he is suggesting a motif of rebirth and an experimental way of salvation; the first with water and the second with an ethical remedy. Water appears to be the medium that connects men and women in a whole way as in the hyacinth garden scene. The issue of harmonized men and women is linked to the restoration of the order in the world on a metaphysical level. This consists with the idea of Eastern philosophy that the universe runs in the harmony of yin and yang. The characters in “A Game of Chess” appear oblivious to the fact that this transcendental providence works behind their phenomenal world.
