국문 초록

본 논문에서는 1926년 1월에서 3월까지 행해진 클라크 강연에서 엘리엇이 형이상학을 어떠한 방식으로 정의하려 하였는지에 대하여 보여주고자 한다. 이 강연에서 엘리엇은 흔히 형이상학 시인으로 불리는 시인들에 대한 자신의 생각을 정리하고자 하고 있다. 엘리엇은 존 드라이든이 내리고 사무엘 존슨이 사용한 형이상학의 정의에 대해 문제를 제기하고, 형이상학적 시기를 사유의 영역에 있는 추상적인 사고가 시의 영역으로 편입되는 시기라 정의 내린다. 이러한 정의 하에 엘리엇은 단테를 위시한 14세기 이탈리아, 던을 비롯한 17세기의 영국, 라포르그와 코르비에르로 대표되는 19세기 프랑스를 세 개의 형이상학적 시기로 보고 있다. 강연에서 엘리엇은 단테를 감성과 이성을 하나로 통합시킨 작가로 보는 반면, 던은 이 둘의 분열을 대표하는 작가로 보고 있다.

영문 초록

This essay, aims to show how Eliot tries to define the meaning of the metaphysical in the Clark Lectures, which had taken place from January to March of 1926. In these lectures, Eliot formulates the ideas on those poets of the seventeenth century that are commonly called by the name of Metaphysical poets. He raises the questions on the original definition of that term (given by John Dryden and adopted by Samuel Johnson) and defines “metaphysical” period as the period in which abstract thoughts, which usually inhabit the realm of thought, is incorporated into that of poetry. With that definition in mind, Eliot sees three periods as “metaphysical”: fourteenth century Italy (represented by Dante and his circle) seventeenth century England (represented by Donne, among many others) and nineteenth century France (represented by Laforgue and Corbière). In the subsequent lectures, Eliot views Dante as the poet who could combine feeling and intellect, and Donne as the one who represents the division between the two.
