도예가 하마다 쇼지(浜田庄司)의 후기 활동과 조선 도자의 조형적 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 20세기의 대표적 공예운동의 하나인 일본 민예운동의 도예가라 할 수 있는 하마다 쇼지를 대상으로 하여 그의 마시코에서의 활동과 작품을 고찰함으로써 개인도예가로서의 활동 및 그 작품의 조형적 특징과 그 의미을 조명하는데 목적이 있다. 도예가 하마다의 활동은 1920년에 영국에서부터 시작되었다. 특히 영국 딧치링(Ditchling) 마을의 공예촌에서의 경험은 그에게 공예에 있어서의 지역성과 밀착된 삶과 실용적 공예의 가치를 자각하게 하였고 그것이 마시코에의 정착을 이끈 계기가 되었다. 귀국 후, 그는 야나기 무네요시가 주창한 민예운동에 가담하여 민예운동의 대표적 도예가로서 활동하였다. 개성에 바탕한 근대미술의 일반적인 경향과 달리, 그는 소박한 민중의 일상적 도자기가 지닌 아름다움에 주목하면서 민예에 내재된 ‘타력(他力)’의 힘을 의식적으로 수용했다. 그는 40대부터 마시코라는 도자기 마을에 살면서 그 지역의 재료와 문화, 그리고 자신의 일상생활을 일치시킴으로써 민예운동을 가장 잘 실천한 도예가로 인정받았다. 또한 그는 야나기 무네요시 및 버나드 리치 등과 더불어 국제적인 도예활동을 펼쳐 동서양 현대도예의 발전에 가교 역할을 하기도 했다. 그의 후기 작품들은 양식적으로 다양하지만 작품제작을 대표하는 조형적 원천은 조선의 도자라고 할 수 있다. 그러한 영향은 영국시절부터 만년의 작품에까지 두루 나타난다. 그는 비록 도예를 ‘오키나와에서 배웠다’고 표현했으나 조형적인 모델은 조선 도자에서 수용한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그의 작품에서 조선의 분청사기와 백자 및 옹기와의 상관성이 잘 나타나는데, 하나다의 작품의 나타나는 조선 도자기로부터의 구체적인 영향은 2가지로 분류할 수 있다. 첫째, 형태에 관한 구체적인 영향으로서는 풍부한 양감과 두께감, 넉넉한 인상의 안정감, 각형, 편병, 조선 다완의 굽 등에서 나타난다. 둘째, 제작기법적인 측면에서는 면치기, 백화장토의 장식, 철사, 지묘(指描) 등이 두드러진다.

영문 초록

This research is aimed at shedding light on his activities and works in Mashiko, targeting Shoji Hamada, a potter of Japan s Mingei Movement, one of the representative craft movements of the 20th century. Hamada s activities as a potter began in England in 1920. In particular, his experience in the craft village of Ditchling, England, made him aware of the locality in craft and the value of life and practical craft, which led to the settlement of Mashiko. After returning home, he participated in the civil arts movement advocated by Yanagi Muneyoshi and served as a leading potter of the Mingei movement. Contrary to the usual trend of modern art based on individuality, he consciously embraced the power of tradition, such as an annihilation of self or unconscious, inherent in Mingei, paying attention to the aesthetic value of simple and everyday artifacts. Since his 40s, he has lived in a pottery village called Masiko and has been recognized as a potter who best practiced the Mingei movement by matching the local materials, culture and his daily life. He also played a bridging role in the development of contemporary art in the East and the West by performing international ceramic arts activities along with Yanagi Muneyoshi and Bernard Reach. His later works come in various forms and styles, but the source that represents the production of the works is Korean ceramics from the Joseon Dynasty. Such effects range from British times to later works. He described his ceramic work as learned from Okinawa, but in fact, it can be said that there were more receptions from pottery from the Joseon Dynasty. In his works, there is a good correlation between Buncheong-Sagi and white porcelain and Onggi during the Joseon Dynasty, and such specific effects of Hamada s works can be classified into two categories. First, specific influences on form are shown in imposing texture and thickness, vivid and generous impression stability, angular shape, flat bottle, and bend of Joseon Teabowl. Second, in terms of manufacturing technique, the decoration of white engobe, faceting, iron glaze, and surface decoration by fingers are prominent.
