몰드(Mold) 성형 기법의 역사와 작가 사례 연구

국문 초록

오늘날 도자분야의 대량생산방식에 보편화된 석고몰드는 유럽에서 도입이 되었고 제품생산을 위한 산업도자분야 뿐만 아니라 도자예술분야에서도 활용되고 있다. 석고가 발견되기 이전 인류는 자연물을 몰드(mold)로 사용하였고 시간이 경과하면서 소성된 흙 몰드(fired clay mold)로 틀의 유형이 진화하였다. 본 연구는 문헌을 통하여 몰드의 역사적 사례들을 살펴보고 나라와 지역의 독특한 제작양상과 특징적 요소를 고찰해보고자 한다. 또한, 몰드 성형기법이 현대에 와서 다양하게 응용되어 작가들의 작품에 사용되어지고 과거의 몰드의 개념이 현대에 와서 어떻게 확장되어 변용되었는지 작가의 작업사례를 통하여 살펴보는 것이 연구목적이다. 고대부터 사용된 몰드의 유형과 양산되어진 도자기의 특징과 기법에 관한 연구를 살펴보면 중국의 경우 고대부터 금속과 더불어 몰드가 많이 활용되었고 점차 발달하여 송나라 때에는 섬세한 도범(陶範)을 활용한 생산이 체계적으로 이루어졌다. 이러한 기술공정은 고려시대 청자생산에도 영향을 주었고 조선시대에는 몰드를 활용한 양각백자가 생산되었다. 다른 시기인 고대 로마의 아레타인웨어(Arretine ware)는 제작을 위한 몰드가 감각적이며 여기서 양산된 도자기는 형태와 기술적인 면에서 혁신적이다. 또 다른 지역인 남미는 제작된 도자형태와 흙 몰드를 통해서 그들만의 조형미와 삶 속에서 생성된 독특한 문화를 엿 볼 수 있다. 몰드는 역사적으로 생산방식에 있어서 많은 부분을 변화시켰고 오늘날에도 도자분야뿐만 아니라 산업디자인에서도 응용되어 활용되고 있다. 몰드는 단순히 복제생산방식을 위한 수단을 넘어 다양한 제작기법으로 발전가능성이 있으며 나아가 새롭게 해석한 몰드변형의 사례를 통하여 한정되었던 학술적 부분에 대한 연구와 도자예술분야에 참고적 사례가 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Technique of mass reproduced plaster mold was introduced in Europe. Not only there have been few studies on the types of molds used for mass reproduction but also techniques for ceramics were influenced by molds. Prior to the discovery of plaster of Paris, in the past, humankind used mold made of animal bones or natural objects and later developed on the form of fired clay mold. This study reviews the historical cases of molds and examines the unique aspects of production and characteristics of countries and region. Also, the purpose of the study is to explore how technique of mold has been applied in modern times to various applications and how the concepts of the clay mold have been expanded and transformed by contemporary ceramists. From ancient times, China widely used in mold with metal technique, and as it gradually developed. During the Song Dynasty, the production using the delicate clay mold(Dobum) was performed systematically. This technique of mold also influenced the production of Celadon in Goryeo period and the production of embossed white porcelain in Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, Arretine ware of the Roman Empire offered examples of sensual and technical features through the mold. Through the mold of techniques in South America, we can see the unique culture created in its own form of stirrup bottle and their lifestyle. The mold has historically transformed the technique of ceramics, and also heavily influenced industrial design today. It is hoped that the use of mold will be limited solely as a method for mass reproduction, but also suggest possibilities for various technique in ceramics and further instigate new discussion in the academic field.
