인천 서곶옹기의 손그림 문양 연구

국문 초록

귤현동은 고종 21년인 1884년 조(條)에 당산면(堂山面)의 굴재를 귤현리(橘峴里)로 명기(名記) 하였다는 기록으로 보아 120년 이전에 형성된 마을이며 귤현동에서 서곶(西串)까지는 약 8km정도 떨어져 있다. 귤현동은 생활의 대부분을 자급자족하는 전형적인 농촌마을로서 예전부터 이주민이 별로 없었으며 이로 인해 서곶에서 제작된 항아리들이 고스란히 남아있을 수 있었다. 구전(口傳)에 의하면 서곶의 옹기점은 80여 년 전에 개점하였고 1960~1970년대까지도 아랫독점과 윗독점 이외에 시루점(질그릇)도 있었다고 한다. 그러나 시루점은 일찍이 문을 닫고 아랫독점은 1970~1980년대에 광명단(산화납, Pb3O5)사건때 문을 닫았다. 현재는 윗독점(현재 신일산업)만이 생산방식을 바꾸어 서곶옹기의 명맥을 이어오고 있다. 예전이나 지금이나 옹기점의 작업구성은 항아리를 만드는 대장과 시유와 그림 등 자질구레한 일을 도맡아 하는 거나꾼과 흙을 만드는 질꾼으로 나뉜다. 대장이 항아리를 만들어 손띠문, 근개띠문, 목질띠문, 압인문, 도롱테문 등을 시문하면 거나꾼이 잿물을 칠 때 항아리에 손그림을 그려 넣었다. 현대의 도시 집중적 주거환경과 핵가족 사회에서 인천의 옹기점은 주문생산에 의한 큰 항아리 제작 외에는 대부분 작은 항아리들과 다양한 기물에 맞추어 생산하게 되었고, 2007년을 전후해 작업 여건상의 문제로 손그림 작업을 중단하였다. 귤현동에서 수집한 서곶옹기의 손그림 문양은 크게 난초문(蘭草紋)과 학문(鶴紋), 학 연습문으로 나눌 수 있다. 난초문(蘭草紋)은 엄지나 검지로 난 줄기를 밑에서 위로 좌우대칭이 되게 올려 그린 후, 난 봉오리와 잎을 항아리의 크기에 따라서 3단, 2단 1단으로 정하여 그려준다. 학문(鶴紋)은 비상하는 학의 머리 방향에 따라 우(右)학, 좌(左)학, 수평(水平)학 이외에도 운학(雲鶴), 쌍학(双鶴), 좌학(座鶴) 등이 있으며 학 그림은 대체적으로 날개를 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로 검지·중지·약지·소지를 경우에 따라 사용하며 몸통은 엄지나 검지를 이용하여 그리는 것이 대부분이다.

영문 초록

In 1884, the 21st year of King Gojong, it is recorded that Guljae of Dangsanmyeong was named as Gyulhyeongri. Hence this village was formed 120 years ago and is about 8km away from Seogot. Gyulhyeongdong was a typical rural village that was self sufficient and since the beginning it did not h ave a lot of people from outside. Therefore the potteries made in Seogot area could retain its tradition. According to the oral tradition, onggi house in Seogot area opened nearly 80 years ago. Till the 1960 to 1970s there was not only lower (aledokgeon) and upper (uidokgeon) onggi house but also earthenware (sirugeon) house. However the earthenware house closed down early and the lower onggi house closed down during the Red Lead incident during the 1970 to 1980s. Nowadays only upper onggi house (Shinil Co.) continues Seogot onggi s tradition by changing its production method. In the past and now work in onggi house is divided into certain roles. There is daejang who makes the pot and gernagguen who takes care of glazing and other details. Then there is jilgguen who mixes and prepares the soil. When daejang makes the pot he or she will decorate it with various patterns like sonttimun, geungaettimun, mokjilttimun, apinmun, dorongtaemun then gernagguen will finger paint orchid and crane while glazing. With the changes made by nuclear family and present days urban centered lifestyle the onggi house of Incheon also had to adapt to new changes. Therefore besides the made to order big pots, they are mainly making small potteries and other things to fit the various goods. And since 2007, due to many reasons they had to stop the finger painting work. When we look at finger paintings of Seogot onggi collected from Gyulhyeongdong, it is largely divided into three patterns; orchid (Nanmun), crane (Hakmun) and crane practice (Hakyeonsupmun) pattern. The orchid pattern uses the thumb and forefinger to draw the stem from below to top making it look perfectly even, then the floral bud and leaf can be determined by the size of the pot. Crane pattern is named after its direction of head; right crane, left crane and horizontal crane. Crane pattern is also named after its painting; crane and cloud, two cranes and sitting crane. The crane painting usually draws the wing from right to left using all the fingers suitably except for the thumb. The body of crane is normally drawn using the thumb and forefinger.
