국문 초록

본 연구는 청소년 판타지 소설인 《초콜릿 하트 드래곤》이 소녀 드래곤의 인간계 적응과정을 통해 청소년기의 발달과업인 정체성을 형성하는 과정을 묘사하고 있다고보고 이 과정을 정체성리터러시를 적용해 추적하고 있다. 주인공 어벤추린은 자신의가치를 증명하기 위해 가출했다가 마법에 걸려 인간으로 변신, 드라헨부르크에 정착하며 의미있는 타자들의 영향으로 인간 세계의 가치관을 배우는 동시에 초콜릿 공방의 도제로서 사회적 정체성을 형성한다. 본 연구는 소설에 등장하는 판타지 요소인‘드래곤’과 ‘마법’, 배경 장소인 ‘18세기의 드라헨부르크’의 의의를 분석한 다음, 또다른 중요한 요소인 초콜릿의 의의를 분석한다. 드래곤은 고대 신화에 등장하는 상상의 동물로, 인간을 초월하는 힘을 지닌 강한 동물이므로 여성 특히 소녀가 지닌 진정한 자아의 잠재력을 말하기 위해 차용한다. 다른 판타지 요소인 마법은 변화를 의미하므로 어벤추린이 전혀 다른 두 세계, 원시 세계를 의미하는 드래곤의 세계에서문명을 의미하는 인간 세계로 건너오는 통과의례로 작용한다. 세 번째 판타지 요소인 18세기의 드라헨부르크는 고대 신화 및 오페라에서 드래곤과 연관되어 있는 장소로 드래곤이 등장하는 좋은 배경으로 작용한다. 또 다른 필수 문학적 장치인 초콜릿은 주인공이 마법에 걸리는 동기인 동시에 인간세계에 적응하며 살아가는 동안 온갖어려움을 이겨내도록 하는 동기로 작동한다. 이처럼 정체성의 형성과정을 묘사한 본소설은 타 판타지 소설과는 달리 판타지적 요소를 도피 혹은 즐기는 용도로 사용하는것이 아니라 반대로 현실 세계에서 일어나는 어려움을 극복하는 여성 청소년을 그려내는 문학적 장치로 사용해 오히려 리얼리티를 보여주는 역할을 하고 있다. 또한 이과정에서 본 판타지는 신화에서와는 달리 드래곤을 주체로 만들어 조명하는 동시에현대 여성 청소년의 성장 가능성을 그려냈다는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study explores the process of establishing identity, a developmental task of adolescence, through the story of a girl dragon’s adaptation to the human world in a fantasy novel, The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart, using identity literacy. The girl dragon protagonist runs away from her family cave to prove her worth, turns into a human being by magic, settles in the city, learns the values of the human world under the influence of significant others, and forms a social identity as an apprentice to the chocolate workshop. Since the novel is a fantasy, this study analyzes the significance of “Dragon,” “Magic,” and “Drachenburg in the 18th century,” the fantasy elements. Then it examines the importance of the chocolate, another noteworthy feature. As a dragon is an imaginary animal with overwhelming power in ancient myths, the writer uses it to symbolize the strength of true ego, the potential of a young adolescent girl. Magic, the other fantasy factor, means change, so it works as a rite of passage across two completely different worlds, from the dragon world of primitive to the human world of civilization. Meanwhile, Drachenburg in the 18th century, the third fantasy segment, is a place related to the dragon in ancient myths and the famous opera and acts as a good background place for dragons. The chocolate, the other vital literary device, plays as a solid motive to form a narrative identity causing the protagonist to overcome difficulties. Unlike other fantasy novels, this novel does not use fantasy elements for amusement or escape from the real world. Instead, it uses them to depict the realistic probability of an unrealistic story. It is also meaningful that the girl dragon plays as a subject, not an object, unlike other dragon stories. Therefore the novel tries to signify the growth potential of a modern female adolescent.
