국문 초록

루벤 외스틀룬드 감독의 <더 스퀘어>는 현대미술관 안팎의 인물들과 우연적 상황들의 묘사를 통해 예술과 자본, 문화엘리트와 대중의 상호 소외를 풍자적으로 묘사한다. 극 중 『더 스퀘어』라 명명된 설치미술 작품은 바닥에 정방형 표식을 새겨넣은 형태로 신뢰와 배려의 중요성을 상징한다. 그러나 미술관 운영진과 예술가들, 후원인들은 폐쇄적이고 자기만족적인 예술담론 안에 안주하며 예술작품의 메시지를 삶으로 승화하지는 못한다. <더 스퀘어>에 대한 저널리즘 비평은 이 영화가 현대예술계의 불통을 질타하는 동시에 현대예술 자체의 무능을 설파한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 <더 스퀘어>가 예술담론의 자기모순을 드러내기 위해 극 중 예술작품들과 연극적 설정을 적극 활용한다고 주장한다. 이를 설명하기 위해 개념미술의 원리와 작동방식을 영화텍스트의 해석에 적용한다. 개념미술은 감각적 자극 대신 지적 추론을 촉구하는 예술 방법론이다. 개념미술 작품은 매체가 아닌 수단으로 기능하며 소재로 삼은 대상에 대한 이성적 판단을 환기한다. 본 연구는 『더 스퀘어』를 비롯한 극 중 예술작품들과 극적 상황들이 개념미술적 장치들로 기능하며 영화관객에게 예술과 삶에 대한 성찰을 유도한다고 해석한다. 결론에 이르러 개념미술과 결합한 극영화가 예술의 은유적 속성을 드러낸다고 평가한다.

영문 초록

Ruben Ruben Östlund’s The Square (2017) presents art museum works and their daily activities, satirizing the alienated relationships between the arts and the capital and between cultural elites and the public. In the film, the installation work entitled The Square is designed symbolize the importance of trust and caring. In contrast, the artists, the museum managers, and the art patrons are confined to the exclusive and self-gratifying art world. Journalistic criticisms observe that the film denounces the art scene’s inability to communicate and contemporary art in its entirety. However, this study argues that the film makes full use of the artworks and dramatic situations as a device to reveal the self-contradiction of the modern artistic discourse. This study applies the principles and operative mechanisms of conceptual art to the interpretation of the film text. The conceptual art is a creative method that appeals to the audience’s reasoning, not perception. The conceptual art functions as a means, rather than a medium, to invoke intellectual judgment. This study suggests that the artworks including The Square within the film function as conceptual-artistic devices, inducing the film audience to reflect on the art and life. It concludes that the combination of cinema and conceptual art accentuates the art’s metaphorical essence.
