국문 초록

최근 웹툰에서의 여성 혐오 논란이 이어지고 있지만, 관련 연구는 주로 스토리와 캐릭터의 성격 분석에 머물러있다. 이 논문은 만화작품에서 여성 차별, 여성혐오에 대한 연구를 시각적 재현까지 확장하고, 여성 가슴의 시각적 재현 유형분류와 분석을 통해 여성 혐오에 이르는 작품들을 줄이는데 기여하려고 한다. 여성 가슴의 시각적 재현 유형은 성차별적인 이상적 유형, 혐오적 유형, 그리고 성평등적인 중립적 유형, 세 가지로 분류한다. 이상적 유형은 스토리, 캐릭터와의 관련성을 적극적으로 설명하기 어려운데도 이런 상황을 인지하지 못한다는 점에서 스토리, 캐릭터와의 ‘비가시적인’ 불일치를 보인다. 두 번째 혐오적 유형은 여성 차별을 넘어 여성 혐오를 보이는 것으로 캐릭터나 스토리의 성격과 무관하게 여성의 가슴에 과도한 시선을 끌고 스토리의 원만한 진행을 방해한다. 마지막으로 스토리, 캐릭터와의 자연스러운 일치를 보여주며, 스토리 진행을 방해하지 않는다는 점에서 중립적인 유형이 있다. 작품들을 세 유형으로 분석하고 나면, 혐오적 유형은 양적으로 많지 않아도 눈에 쉽게 띄는 반면 이상적 유형은 양적으로 많은데도 그다지 주목받지 않았다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 이상적 유형이 ‘자연적’인 것이 아니라 ‘관습적’이며 여전히 성차별적이라는 점을, 성평등적인 중립적 유형과의 비교를 통해 명확히 드러낼 필요가 있다. 이런 과정을 통해 혐오적 유형은 물론 이상적 유형에 대한 문제의식을 확장시켜 나간다면 웹툰 역시 성평등성이 잘 드러나는 표현형식으로 변모해나가지 않을까 기대한다.

영문 초록

While a lot has been recently written about the issue of misogyny in comics, these discussions have largely centered around questions of character and plot analysis.This paper attempts to enlarge the scope of these discussions by drawing attention to the pictorial depiction of women in comics - most specifically, to the different ways in which comics have represented their female characters breast. This paper will classify these representations to fall broadly into three categories: a (sexist) idealizing depiction of female breast, a misogynistic kind of depiction, and an egalitarian, neutral kind of depiction. The first type is characterized by the fact that while it bears little relation to the webtoon s storyline or by its characters, its discrepancy with these elements is made largely invisible. The second type - which goes beyond sexism to border misogyny - draws excessive attention to female breasts (a feature which is often at odds with its characters), and so to the point of causing nuisance to the flow of the story. The final type may be called neutral in the sense that it syncs with the overall structure of the work and does not distract from the plot. By classifying different comics works into these three types, I notice that while the misogygnistic type were the most noticeable, the idealizing type passed largely unnoticed despite being more numerous. What needs to be shown is that this idealizing depiction is not natural but rather socially habitual , through their comparison with the aforementioned more neutral kind of depiction. We hope that webtoons will be able to adopt a more gender-equal visual expression by distancing itself from both types of depiction.
