천주인 안중근의 ‘의거’를 돌아보다 -동양평화론에 대한 기독교윤리적 이해

국문 초록

안중근 의사는 그의 세례명 ‘토마스’(多默, 도마)가 말해주듯이, 독실한 가톨릭 신자다. 무릇 기독교인이라면 십계명을 잘 알고 있을 뿐만 아니라 지키려고 애쓸 터이다. 그런 그가 여섯 번째 계명인 ‘살인하지 말라’를 어겼다. 적국의 수장 이토 히로부미를 처단한 것이다. 이는 절대 개인 차원의 범법행위일 수 없다. 세계가 ‘만국공법’ 질서 아래 편입된 근대의 시간 속에서 한 나라의 군인으로 적법하게 침략전쟁에 맞선 항거였음에도, 일제는 야만적인 불법 재판으로 속히 사형을 집행했다. 아니 그의 ‘의거’를 모욕한 건 일제만이 아니었다. 당시 가톨릭의 수뇌부 역시 안중근을 살인자로 취급하며 종부성사를 허용치 않았다. 이 글은 안중근의 ‘의거’의 성격을 규명하기 위해 그가 천주인이라는 점에 주목한다. 그가 이해한 만국공법 체계가 자연법에 잇닿아 있음을 지적한 뒤, 그러나 일제가 만국공법을 적극적으로 수용한 속내는 철저히 ‘사회진화론’에 터하고 있음을 밝힌다. 그러고 나서 안중근의 미완성작 「동양평화론」을 꼼꼼히 독해하며, 거기에 깔린 ‘인종주의적 함의’란 다만 일본제국의 식민지 야욕을 저지하기 위한 수사학적 방편이라고 주장한다. 끝으로 안중근의 ‘의거’가 지닌 기독교 윤리적 의미와 가치를 되새김질하는 것으로 글을 맺는다.

영문 초록

Patriot Ahn Jung-geun, as his baptismal name ‘Thomas’ showed, was a faithful Catholic. It is certain that anyone who belongs to Christianity should know Decalogue(the ten commandments) as well as try to keep them. Besides, Ahn violated the sixth commandment, that is, ‘Thou shalt not kill’ by assassinating Ito Hirobumi who was the Japanese administrator of power in Korea at Harbin in 1909. That was never misconduct at an individual level, but a righteous protest as a Korean soldier, chief of staff, against Japanese invasion. Nevertheless, the Japanese court executed him a death sentence by hasty trial even in the modern time when the world has been brought under ‘Mankukgongbeub’(the international law) system. It was not only the Japanese empire that insulted Ahn’s patriotic deed but also the chief executives of Catholicism at that time by denying Ahn’s request to give himself the last rites on the grounds that Ahn was a simple ‘murderer’ or a ‘terrorist’. This article pays attention to his being a Catholic to investigate the essence of his deed at Harbin. Ahn had a good understanding of ‘Mankukgongbeub’ that was formed on the basis of the Natural Law. However, the Japanese empire adopted it to justify its colonialist ambition stemmed from Social Darwinism. This paper reviews Ahn’s unfinished work from prison titled Theory of Oriental Peace and suggests that the racist implication infused in it was just a rhetorical means to restrain Japanese ambition to colonize Korea. Finally, the author concludes by pondering the meaning and value of Ahn’s patriotic deed from the Christian ethical perspective.
