국문 초록

이 연구는 한국의 MZ세대의 반중감정의 원인과 이들이 향후 한중관계에 끼칠 영향에 대해 검토했다. 한국의 이들 세대는 민주화와 경제성장 및 한국의 국제적 위상 상승과 맞물려 선진국 국민으로서 정체성을 습득해 왔다. 집단보다 ‘나’에 집중하는 개인적인 성향이 강하지만, 공정하고 안정적이며 깨끗한 사회 환경에 대한 기대치가 높다. 아울러 이들 젊은 층은 한국문화의 세계적 안착으로 문화적 자존감이 굉장히 높은 세대이다. 하지만 좁은 취업 시장과 경제적 불안정성은 한국 이주 외국인들에 대해 배타적인 민족주의적 성향 또한 갖고 있다. 그래서 한국 MZ세대는 진보적이면서도 보수적이다. MZ세대의 배타성이 향하는 타자는 이들의 성장기에서 가장 많이 직간접적으로 경험했던 중국과 중국인이다. 하지만 MZ세대가 경험한 중국과 중국인은 부정적으로 점철되어 있다. 이들은 중국 유학생을 떠받드는 강의실에서 역차별을 경험했고, 중국인들과의 대화에서 중화주의적인 세계관을 경험했다. 공정성과 환경·보건을 중시하는 한국 젊은이들에게 중국발 미세먼지와 코로나-19, 홍콩에서의 인권사태 등에 모르쇠와 강경책으로 일관하는 중국 정부에 분노해 왔다. 더군다나 민족 자존감의 원천이었던 한국 대중·전통문화를 중국 문화의 일부로 귀속시키려 하는 일련의 사태는 이 젊은 세대의 자존감을 훼손한다고 여겨졌고 때론 집단행동으로 표출되었다. 이렇듯 젊은 층을 중심으로 한국인과 중국인의 정체성 균열은 서서히 벌어지고 있다. 이런 측면에서 미래의 정치 주역인 MZ세대의 반중감정은 향후 한중관계에 잠재적으로 부정적인 영향을 줄 것이다.

영문 초록

This study has attempted to examine the causes of anti-China sentiment in Young Koreans so called “Generation MZ” and how this sentiment impacts on the future S. Korea-China relations. The generation has acquired their identity as citizens of advanced countries in line with democratization, economic growth, and the rise of Korea’s international status. Strongly focusing on “I” rather than others, they tend to seek better communities to live a politically fair and economically stable society with clean and safe environment. Additionally, it is the generation that they posse very high cultural selfesteem due to the global success of the Korean Culture. At the same time, the narrow job market and economic instability have led them to have exclusive nationalistic tendency toward foreigners. In this regard, “Generation MZ” is progressive and conservative. The problem is their strong exclusivity towards China and Chinese. They have met China-centered world view on the campus and working places. There are still many doubts about the Chinese government before and after the Covid-19 outbreak. Also, China is nothing but a communist-authoritarian state that does not follow international norms and fair multilateral diplomacy. Furthermore, various attempts to absorb Korean traditional culture as well as China’s growing shadow over the Korean culture industry have lead the generation to feel a loss of national self-esteem. These are very problematic to the young in S. Korea, who value fairness. Still, they are not leading group nor generation in S. Korean politics, but their anti- Chinese sentiment has been being slowly but surely impacted on real politics. This is why the future S. Korean and China relations is not bright.
