영문 초록

The recent shortage of fossil fuels and their rising cost have caused the wood-processing industry to seek ways to conserve energy and reduce production costs. Conventional kiln drying of wood is a very energy-consuming process and in many cases the small operator cannot afford to buy a dry kiln. Forced-air drying test on 2.5cm-thick Quercus acutissima was performed to investigate the forced air drying characteristics of Korean domestic species. Drying-time was reduced about 50% from initial moisture content(IMC) to 30% moisture content with 1.5m/sec. of air velocity, whereas there was no significant difference in drying rate between forced-air and natural-air drying from 30% moisture content to 13% moisture content. Severe drying defects such as surface check and split occurred during both forced-air and natural-air drying. This significant drying degrade was mainly due to the large area of juvenile wood on sample boards.
