국문 초록

17세기에도 소설부정론은 여전히 지속되었지만, 소설 독자층이 점점 폭넓어지면서 소설은 더욱 성행하게 되었다. 이는 소설이 당시 조선사회에서 하나의 문학양식으로 자리매김 되어가고 있었음을 의미한다. 이처럼 소설이 자신의 영역을 확장해가고 있었던 17세기는 고전소설사에 있어서 아주 중요한 시기이다. 이 시기 소설류의 유행과정을 추적해보면 17세기 소설사의 地形圖를 만드는데 상당한 도움이 될 것이다. 이런 이유 때문에 본고에서는 17세기에 소설책들이 어떤 방식을 통해 향유되고 어떤 경로를 통해 전파되면서 유행되었는지를 살펴보았다. 유행양상은 크게 내적 유행양상과 외적 유행양상으로 나누어 보았다. 소설책 자체에 대한 향유를 통해 전파되는 양상을 내적유행양상으로 범주화하였다. 즉 ① 傳寫/借覽, ② 학습교재, ③ 듣기와 낭독, ④ 한문소설의 번역을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 반면 소설책이 어떤 경로를 통해서, 또는 누구에 의해 전파되었는지 소설책의 이동을 중심으로 파악하여 외적유행양상으로 범주화하였다. 즉 ① 贈與, ② 독자 상호간의 매매, ③ 使臣과 譯官에 의한 중국소설의 유입, ④ 書儈의 활동과 소설유통을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 전자가, 소설 독서 자체가 목적이 되어 소설책이 전파된 양상이라면, 후자는 소설 독서 이외의 목적이 우선시 되면서 소설책이 전파된 양상이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Negative perspectives of novels still existed in the 17th century, when readers of novels were gradually increasing. It means that novels were establishing their presence as a form of literature in the Joseon Dynasty. The 17th century when novels were expanding their own horizon was a very important time in the history of classic novels. Examining the process of novels disseminating that time will be of great help to understanding an outline of the novel history in the 17th century. In this regard, this thesis aims to investigate into the channels of the spreading of novels in the 17th century and into how they were enjoyed by people. Features of the spreading of novels are largely classified into two ways : internal spreading and external spreading. The former mainly comprises ①transcribing and/or lending books, ②teaching material, ③listening and declaiming, and ④translating the novels written in Chinese. In contrast, the latter comprises ①donation, ②selling and buying between readers, ③inflow of Chinese novels through envoys and interpreters, and ④the activities of Seokwe(intermediary dealers of books).
