국문 초록

珙白堂 黃德壹(1748~1800)은 18세기 중반을 살았던 조선의 학자이자 지성인이다. 동생 下廬 黃德吉과 함께 順菴 安鼎福의 嫡傳 弟子로 순암에게 지대한 영향을 받았으며, 이후 순암을 중심으로 하는 순암계열 星湖學派의 성립에 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 하지만 공백당은 평생 관직에 진출하고자 하는 뜻을 가지지 않았으며, 남겨놓은 문집의 양도 얼마 되지 않아 현재까지 그에 대해 알려진 것이 그다지 많지 않은 실정이다. 연구자들 역시 그에 대한 관심보다 동생 하려 황덕길에 주목하여 아직까지 공백당을 중심에 둔 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 이 글은 공백당 황덕일의 시문학 작품을 대상으로 한 것이다. 공백당의 문집에 수록되어 있는 시문학 작품이 모두 15수이니, 남아 전하는 얼마 되지 않는 공백당의 저술 가운데에서도 그의 시문학 작품은 극히 일부분이라고 할 수 있다. 또 그가 평생 관직에 나가지 않고 在野에서 학문을 닦으며 後學을 양성했던 학자였다는 점에서 시는 공백당의 학문적 정수라고 보기 어렵다. 하지만 그의 시가 얼마 되지 않고, 그가 문학에 대해 그다지 주목하지 않았다는 것이 그의 시문학 작품들을 버려두는 이유가 될 수는 없다. 더욱이 그가 順菴 安鼎福의 高弟로 순암계열 성호학파의 형성에 결정적인 역할을 했다는 점에서 얼마 되지 않는 그의 시문학 작품이라고 하더라도 이 작품들은 적극적인 검토의 필요가 있다. 남아 전하는 공백당의 시는 기행시에서 만시까지 다양한 유형으로 창작되었지만, 내용은 거의 대부분이 도덕과 수양으로 귀결된다. 문학적 수사나 기법이 배제되었고, 전고의 활용이나 僻字의 사용이 쉽게 찾아지지 않는다. 철저하게 내용 중심이고, 그 내용은 학문과 수양으로 정리가 가능하다. 이런 모습은 그의 스승인 순암과 유사한 것이지만, 내용면에서 또 문학적 기교의 면에서 순암보다 더 보수적이고 전통적인 모습을 보여준다. 이와 같은 모습으로 볼 때 성호학파 순암계열에서 찾을 수 있는 전통적이고 보수적인 모습은 순암 이후 그의 후학들을 거치면서 더욱 완고해졌다고 생각된다. 이와 같은 완고한 보수화의 양상과 이유, 그리고 그 의미는 공백당 뿐만 아니라 그의 후학들에 대한 종합적이고 체계적인 검토를 통해 보다 구체적으로 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Gongbaekdang Hwang Deogil is a scholar and intellectual of Joseon who lived in the mid-18th century. Gongbaekdang was greatly influenced by Sunam as a direct-learned disciple of Sunam Anjeongbok, along with his brother Haryeo Hwang Deokgil, and later played a decisive role in the establishment of Seongho School’s Sunam faction, centered on Sunam. However Gongbaekdang did not have the intention to enter a government position for a lifetime, and the amount of the literary works left behind is not so much, so not known until now. The researchers also focused on their younger brother, Haryeo Hwang Deokgil, and few studies have been conducted focusing on Gongbaekdang. This article is about the poetic works of Gongbaekdang Hwang Deogil. There are 15 poetic works in the literary collection of Gongbaekdang, and his poetic works are very small part of the writings of Gongbaekdang, which is a residual. In addition, it is difficult to say that poetry is the academic essence of Gongbaekdang in that he was a scholar who cultivated his disciples by polishing his studies in his life without going to government position for a lifetime. However the fact that his poetry is not so much and he did not pay much attention to literature can not be a reason to abandon his poetry works. Moreover even if he is a poetic work that is not long since he played a decisive role in the formation of the Seongho School’s Sunam faction as an outstanding student of Sunam Anjeongbok, these works need to be actively reviewed. The remaining Gongbaekdang poems were created in various types from a poetry of account of travels to a poetry of repose of souls, but most of the contents are mostly morals and moral cultures. Literary rhetoric and techniques were excluded, and the use of idioms or the use of an unusual letter is not easily found. It is thoroughly content-centered, and the contents can be summarized into academic and moral culture. This is similar to his teacher, Sunam, but in terms of content and literary technique, it shows more conservative and traditional than Sunam. In this way, the traditional and conservative aspect found in the Seongho School’s Sunam faction is thought to have become more stubborn through his disciples after Sunam. The aspect and reason of this stubborn conservatism, and its meaning can be confirmed more specifically through the review of his disciples as well as the Gongbaekdang.
