국문 초록

본고는 直堂 申鉉國의 衛正斥邪論의 특징을 고찰하였다. 그는 초기에 큰 스승 박세화를 따라 적극적이고 투쟁적인 대일 의거 태도를 나타냈지만 민중들과 연계한 의병 운동에 직접 가담하지는 않았다. 경술 합방에 분노한 박세화의 순도 이후에 시대의 변화를 인식한 신현국의 위정척사운동 전개는 변화가 나타났다. 이념적이고 도덕론적인 측면으로의 경도이다. 먼저, 그는 ‘道의 전이’라는 의미에서 유학정통의 조선 계승론을 주장하였다. 그는 조선을 제외한 倭洋 등 일체의 외부세력을 이적으로 간주하는 화이관을 바탕으로 위정척사 본연의 의리정신으로 점철된 세계관을 나타냈다. 그러한 인식의 구체적 실천 과정에서 예의문명을 중시하는 도덕적 논리를 발휘하였다. 비교적 보편적일 수 있는 논리이지만 신현국의 이념론적 도덕론적 위정척사 논리는 외이가 창궐하여 다수의 민중이 민족성과 주체성을 잃어 갈 때조차 고유의 도덕전통과 주체성을 자각하여 지속적으로 견지하였으며 해방의 순간에도 우리나라의 가치를 삼강오륜과 도학연원의 정통성, 예악문장의 성대함에서 찾았다는 점에서 그의 위정척사 논리의 도덕적 순수성을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the characteristics of the thought of Wijong-Choksa (衛正斥邪) in Jik-dang Sin Hyeon-guk. In the early days, he followed his great mentor, Bak Se-hwa(朴世和) and actively showed resistance to Japan. But he did not participate directly in the resistance movement in connection with the people. After Bak Se-hwa, who was angry with the loss of sovereignty, committed suicide, he recognized the need to change the way the resistance movement evolved. His method of resistance to Japan changed from active and combative to ideological and moral. First, he insisted that the correct school system of Confucianism was transferred to Joseon. He regarded all the countries of Japan and Western countries except Joseon as enemy. Based on the changed perspective, he emphasized the Yi-Ri(義理) spirit of Confucianism. In practicing the changed perception, he emphasized moral logic that emphasized courtesy civilization. On the theoretical side, his argument can be extremely common. But even when people lost their ethnicity and identity, he wanted to preserve his moral traditions and identity. Even after liberation from Japan, he found the moral legitimacy of state dignity, values, and spirit within Confucian academic traditions. Because of some of these features, his logic is pure in academic and moral terms.
