국문 초록

止窩 趙大壽는 17세기 후반 서인의 인물들과 활발하게 교류하며 정치적으로 입지를 다졌다. 하지만 1700년에 기묘과옥(1699)에 연루되어 선천으로 유배되었다. 그 뒤 해배되고 관직에 의망되지만 반대 세력에 부딪쳐 정치에 몸을 담지 못하게 된다. 이러한 절망적인 삶 속에서도 그는 세상과 단절하며 지내지 않고 강호를 떠돌아다니며 주변의 인물들과 교유하고 자연을 유람하면서 많은 시문을 남겼다. 조대수는 평소 변려문을 잘 짓기로 이름이 났고 그의 종제 趙裕壽는 조대수의 변려문에 대해서 시대의 의식에서 탈피하여 하나의 자체를 이루었다고 칭송하였다. 조대수가 남긴 수많은 작품 중에서 변려문의 형식을 띄고 있는 글로 상량문 한 편이 남아있다. 그가 지은 상량문을 통해 그의 변려문은 어떻게 구성되고 어떠한 내용을 담았는지를 살펴볼 수 있다. 『湖海樓上樑文』은 일반적인 상량문의 형태인 건물을 짓게 된 연기와 그 보존에 대한 당부, 덕업의 계승에 대한 훈계 등과는 달리 자서전이나 회고록과 같으면서도 時政에 대한 疏의 형태를 지닌 작품이다. 이 작품의 결미 부분에서 작가의 집필소회가 강조됨으로써 임금에게 정치에 대해 당부를 한 것이 특색이다. 이 글을 통해 조대수의 전반적인 삶을 들여다볼 수 있고 기묘과옥과 관련하여 그의 입장을 엿볼 수 있다. 조대수는 기묘과옥을 겪은 뒤 예빈시 정에 의망되어 정치 활동을 계속 이어갈 수 있을 듯 보였지만 결국 주변 세력에 막혀 윤허를 받지 못하였다. 이러한 상황에서 관직을 단념하고 공주로 낙향했기 때문에 관직에 대해 미련이 없었을 것으로 보인다. 하지만 임금에게 시대에 필요한 진언을 올리면서 군신관계의 의리를 잊지 않는 모습에서 관직에 대한 미련이 남은 것으로 보이기도 한다.

영문 초록

Jigwa(止窩) Cho Dae-soo(趙大壽) reinforced his political position by actively interacting with the Seo-in people in the late 17th century. However, he was involved in Kimyokwaok(己卯科獄, 1699) and was banished to Seoncheon(宣川) in 1700. After then, his banishment was lifted and was offered a public post, but failed to enter the world of politics due to the objection from the opposing force. Even in such a desperate life, he did not sever the world but roamed around the county to interact with acquaintances and enjoy the nature, leaving a lot of poetry and prose. Cho Dae-soo was famous for his Byeonryeomoon(騈儷文) and his cousin Cho Yoo-soo(趙裕壽) praised Cho Dae-soo’s Byeonryeomoon that he broke away from the consciousness of the era and that he made a style of his own. Among the numerous works Cho Dae-soo created, one piece of Sangnyangmoon is left that has the form of Byeonryeomoon. From the Sangnyangmoon he wrote, we could see how his Byeonryeomoon is composed and what it is about. 『HohaeruSangnyangmun(湖海樓上樑文)』 is more like a autobiography or reminiscence rather than the reason for constructing a building, request for its reservation, advice for succeeding the virtuous deeds, which are the normal from of an ordinary Snagyangmun, and it has the form of so(疏) on the policies of the time. This work is characterized as it pleas for politics to the king as the author’s intentions of writing are emphasized at the end of this work. From this writing, we can look into the overall life of Cho Dae-soo and his opinions regarding Kimyokwaok(己卯科獄). After surviving Kimyokwaok(己卯科獄), Cho Dae-soo was recommended as Yebinsijung(禮賓寺正) and seemed to continue his political career but failed to get the king’s approval, interrupted by the opposite force. In this situation, he abandoned the public post and retired to Gongju, so it seems he had no attachment to public office. But it seems he still had attachment toward public office as he gave advices to the king, not abandoning the loyalty in the relationship between the rule and the ruled.
