『啓蒙篇』의 편찬 배경과 異本에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본고는 1913년부터 발행된 『啓蒙篇諺解』의 異本 13종 비교를 통해 『啓蒙篇』의 善本을 확정하고, 그 내용을 살펴 당시 初學 아동교육용 교과서로 널리 사용된 『계몽편』의 편찬배경과 異本의 양상에 대하여 연구하였다. 『啓蒙篇』은 조선시대 初學 아동교육용 교과서로‚ 19세기 말부터 서당과 鄕校에서 아동에게 글을 가르칠 때‚ 먼저 『千字文』이나 『類合』으로 글자 학습을 한 이후 사용되었던 문장학습 교재이다. 내용은 머릿글 성격의 首篇과 우주와 천체의 운행내용 및 1년의 시간을 설명하는 天篇, 자연 지물과 기상에 대한 설명이 담긴 地篇, 동식물에 관한 이야기와 九九法의 사용을 안내하는 物篇, 그리고 사람이 반드시 지켜야 할 도리와 심신을 수련하는 이치에 관련된 人篇으로 나누어져 있으며, 章節이 짤막하고 내용이 어렵지 않아서 初學者가 句讀와 文義를 해득하는데 비교적 쉽게 구성되어 있다. 『계몽편』은 국립중앙도서관에 소장되어 있는데, 1950년대 이전의 것으로 분류된 것이 100여 종이며, 그 중 원문을 확인할 수 있는 것이 30여 종으로, 여타 초학교재의 이본과 비교해보아도 그 수가 확연히 많다. 『계몽편』이 편저자 미상의 간행연도조차 알려지지 않은 책이지만, 일제 강점기에 조선총독부에 의해 서당교육교재로 지정되어 초학용 교재로 사용되어 왔으며, 광복 이후 오늘날까지도 어린이를 위한 교재로 발간되고 있다. 본고에서는 『계몽편』의 다양한 異本에 나타난 서지형태를 살펴보고, 일본동경학예대학 소장본과 비교하여 내용상의 오류를 검토해보았다. 『계몽편언해』가 발행 초기에는 내용의 누락과 같은 오류를 범하기도 하고, 원문의 모든 글자에 한글 음을 부기하고 언해로 된 해석을 넣어서 단순히 한자로 된 글을 읽고 해석하는데 중점을 둔 교재로 역할을 했다면, 1923년 이후에는 오류는 최소화하고 학습자의 입장에서 이해하기 쉬우면서도 한발 더 나아간 지식을 체득할 수 있는 교재로 거듭났다는 것을 확인하였다. 『계몽편』의 내용이 초등학교 어린이들이 학습하기에도 무리가 없으며 사용되는 단어 역시 실제 사용되는 것들이 대다수이다. 『계몽편』은 19세기 말에서 시작되어 서당에서 사용되는 필수 교재로 자리잡았음에도 불구하고 그에 대한 연구는 그리 많은 편이 아니다. 오랜 기간 동안 초학용 교재로 사용되었던 만큼 현재 교육과정에 적용시킬 수 있는 방법에 대한 연구 또한 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper confirmed the best version of 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 by comparing 12 different versions of 『Gyemongpyeon-eonhae(啓蒙篇諺解)』 which was published from 1913. And by reviewing the contents, this paper researched the editing background of 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 which was widely used as textbook for children’s education and the utilization in Chinese character and Classical Chinese education. 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 was a textbook for children’s education in the Joseon Dynasty. It was a sentence-learning textbook that was used after learning the letters with 『Thousand-Character Classic(千字文)』 or 『Yuhab(類合)』, when teaching writing to children in Seodang(書堂) or Hyanggyo(鄕校) since the end of the 19th century. The contents are divided into ‘Supyeon(首篇)’ which is header part, ‘Cheonpyeon(天篇)’ which explains the operation of space and celestial bodies and the time of year, ‘Jipyeon(地篇)’ which explains about the nature and weather, ‘Mulpyeon(物篇)’ which explains a story about animals and plants or use of a multiplication table, and ‘Inpyeon(人篇)’ which related to the duty that a person must do and the reason for training body and soul. The chapters and verses are short and the content is not difficult, so it is composed with comparative ease for beginners to understand the punctuation and meaning of sentence. 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 is housed in the National Library of Korea. There are about 100 species classified as before the 1950s, and 30 species of them can check the original texts, the number is quite large compared to the different versions of other elementary educational materials. Although the editor and year of publication of 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 was unknown, during the Japanese colonial period, it was designated as an educational textbook for Seodang by the Japanese Government-General of Korea, and has been used as a elementary educational textbook. Since Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, it is still published as a textbook for children. This paper examined the bibliographical forms that appeared in the various different versions of 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』, and reviewed the errors in content by comparing with the collection in Tokyo Gakugei University(日本東京學藝大學). In the beginning of its publication, 『Gyemongpyeon-eonhae(啓蒙篇諺解)』 made errors such as omission of contents, and played a role as a textbook that focused on reading and interpreting Chinese characters by inserting Han-gul sound into every letter of the original text and putting the interpretation with the Korean annotation. However, since 1923, it was confirmed that it was reformed as a textbook that the errors have been minimized and easy to understand from the standpoint of the learner and could acquire the knowledge which goes one step further. The content of 『Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 is easy for elementary school children to learn, and most of the words used are actually used. Although 『 Gyemongpyeon(啓蒙篇)』 began in the end of the 19th century and became an essential textbook used in Seodang, there are not many studies on it. As it has been used as an elementary educational material for a long time, it will also be necessary to study how to apply it to the current curriculum.
