‘역사적 위기’: 개념, 이론, 활용

국문 초록

‘위기’는 본래 고대 그리스에서 나눔(가름, 분열), 선택, 판단, 결정, 불화, 싸움 등을 뜻하는 말이었다. 처음에는 아마도 시나 철학 또는 정치 분야에서 사용되다 나중에는 의학 분야와 일상용어로도 널리 사용되었던 것 같다. 의학에서는 병세의 호전과 악화를 결정하는 위독한(critical) 시기를, 신학에서는 심판 또는 최후의 심판을, 심리학에서는 삶의 양식에서의 연속성을 위협하거나 균형감각의 정서적 불균형을 초래하는 정체성의 혼란을, 경제학에서는 자본주의적 생산양식의 균형 파괴를, 사회학이나 정치학에서는 근본적인 체제의 변화 또는 그 징후 등을 각각 뜻했다. 역사학에서는 위기가 ⑴ 결정적인 시점으로 향해가는 다양한 행위자들에 의한 사건의 연속, ⑵ 역사를 근본적으로 바꾸는 최종적인 역사적인 결정, ⑶ 부단히 재생산되는 위험한 상황들이나 결정이 충만한 상황, ⑷ 역사에 내재하는 과도기적인 개념이자 새로운 시대의 구조적인 징표 등을 뜻한다(R. Koselleck). ‘역사적 위기’라는 개념과 이론을 활용한 역사서술의 사례로는 ⑴ ‘17세기 위기론’(E. Hobsbawm), ⑵ ‘유럽 정신의 위기’(P. Hazard), ⑶ ‘20년의 위기’(E. H. Carr) 등이 있다. 역사학을 포함한 모든 지식 분야에서의 위기 개념을 관통하는 핵심 의미들로는 ⑴ ‘긍정적 미래를 향한 미결정의 순간’, ⑵ ‘큰 도약을 담보하는 대변혁 또는 대변화의 전조’, ⑶ ‘단기간의 치유 가능한 전환점’ 등이 있다.

영문 초록

In ancient Greece the word ‘crisis’ originally meant sharing (separation, division), choice, judgment, decision, discord, and fighting. At first it is probably used in poetry, philosophy, or politics, and later it seems to have been widely used in the medical field and in everyday language as well. In medicine, it signifies a critical period that determines the improvement or worsening of a condition, in theology judgment or doomsday, in psychology confusion of identity that threatens continuity in a way of life or that causes an emotional imbalance, in economics the destruction of the balance of the capitalist mode of production, and in sociology and political science a fundamental change or a symptom of a system. In history, a crisis implies ⑴ a sequence of events caused by various actors leading to a decisive point, ⑵ a final historical decision that radically changes history, ⑶ a state full of dangerous situations or decisions that are constantly reproduced, ⑷ a transitional concept inherent in history and a structural sign of a new era (R. Koselleck). Examples of historical writing using the concept and theory of ‘historical crisis’ include ⑴ ‘The Crisis of the 17th Century’ (E. Hobsbawm), ⑵ ‘The Crisis of the European Consciousness’ (P. Hazard), ⑶ ‘The Twenty Years’ Crisis, 1919-1939’ (E. H. Carr), etc. The core meanings penetrating the concept of crisis in all fields of knowledge, including history, can be listed as follows: ⑴ ‘an undecided moment toward a positive future’, ⑵ ‘a great leap forward or a precursor to a great change’, and ⑶ ‘a turning point that can be healed in a short time’.
