Analysis of Airline Passengers’ Demand for Stopover Airport Choice

국문 초록

본 연구는 유럽 허브공항에서 주요한 신규 공항으로 부상하고 있는 이스탄불과 두바이 국제공항의 경쟁전략을 통해 국내항공사 발전에 실질적인 시사점과 동아시아와 유럽 간 환승노선별 경유지 선택에 미치는 영향에 주목하였다. 차우검정을 통해 글로벌 금융위기 전후를 설정해 유의미한 차이를 확인했다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경유지 공항 선택에서 운임과 총 운항 거리는 주요 변수임에도 상관성이 높지 않았다. 둘째, 이에 비해 선택 대상 경유지 공항 및 기간의 경우, 경유지 공항별 취항지 수 변수의 상관관계가 가장 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 셋째, 소규모 경유지 공항과 대규모 허브공항 간의 경쟁력 비교에서 블록타임 변수는 상관성이 높지 않았다. 넷째, 항공사 특성변수로는 공동운항 여부가 동아시아-유럽 경유노선 공항선택(이스탄불 공항 또는 두바이 공항)의 핵심 요인으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 기반으로 본 연구는 인천국제공항의 허브화 전략을 위한 취항지 수의 증대와 국적 항공사의 국제화 전략에서 외국 항공사와의 공동운항 및 전략적 제휴 확대가 가장 중요하다는 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study gives attention to the practical implications for the development of domestic airlines through the competitive strategies of Istanbul and Dubai International Airports emerging as powerful new ones in European hub ones and the finding influences on air passengers’ choice of stopovers for each transit route between East Asia and Europe. A significant difference was confirmed by setting the period before and after the global financial crisis through the chow test. The study results were summarized as follows: First, there was no high correlation between major variables like fares and total travel distance; second, there was a high correlation in the number of destinations with respect to all stopovers and period; third, there was the highest correlation in the block time for the competitiveness of small airports and large hub airports in stopovers; fourth, it was confirmed that the presence of codeshare among the characteristic variables of airlines was a key factor in the selection of airports via Istanbul and Dubai International Airports in terms of demand for transit routes between East Asia and Europe. Based on those results, it presented practical implications for each of Incheon International Airport’s hub and international strategies.
