국문 초록

이 논문은 앎과 행함 간 괴리를 아리스토텔레스가 아크라시아 개념을 중심으로 어떻게 설명하고 있는지 전체적인 지형도를 그리는 데 목적이 있다. 기존의 연구들은 한 인간이 자제력을 상실하고 아는 바와 어긋나게 행하는 것은 그가 처한 실천적 상황에서 지각한 내용과 평소 가지고 있던 일반적인 행위원칙을 서로 연결시키는 것에 실패했기 때문이라고 설명한다. 그러나 행위하기 전에 정신에서 이루어지는 일련의 추론들이 올바르게 결합되는 데 실패했기 때문이라는 설명은 최선의 선택지를 알지 못했기에 바람직한 행위를 하는 데 실패했다는 소크라테스의 윤리적 주지주의를 거부하는 아리스토텔레스를 비록 세부적인 차이는 있지만 여전히 동일선상에 놓는 것처럼 보인다. 아리스토텔레스는 자제력 없는 행위를 하는 사람을 저열한 욕망의 한 종류인 욕구의 요구대로 움직이는 부류로 이해한다. 그는 특정한 감정 상태로 강렬하게 빠져 들어감으로 지성이 지시하는 것보다 욕구의 목소리에 더 귀 기울인다. 실천적 삼단추론에서 소전제에 대한 앎의 인식에 실패했기에 자제력 없는 행위를 한다는 주지주의적 설명은 강렬한 신체적 욕구에 휩쓸린 이후에 나타나는 부수적 결과를 표현한 것이다. 결국 아리스토텔레스가 바라보는 아크라시아 현상은 인간 영혼의 생리학적 역학에 대한 이해와 그에 따른 지성적인 실패 요인을 함께 고려할 때 적절하게 이해될 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to draw an overall philological map of how Aristotle explains the gap between knowing and doing, centering on the concept of akrasia. Existing studies explain that the reason a person loses self-control and acts contrary to what he knows is because he fails to connect the content he perceives in his practical situation with the general principles of action he usually has. However, the explanation that a series of inferences made in the mind fails to be combined properly before acting seems to put Aristotle, who rejects Socrates ethical intellectualism that one failed to perform a desirable action because he did not know the best option, on the same line. Aristotle prescribes akrates as a type of person who leads himself according to the demands of appetite, a kind of low desire. He enters intensely into a particular emotional state, listening more to the voice of desire than the intellect dictates. The intellectual explanation that the person acts without self-control because he or she fails to recognize the knowledge of the minor premise in the practical syllogism is an expression of the collateral consequences that appear after being swept away by intense physical desire, appetite. In the end, Aristotle’s view of akrasia can be properly understood when the understanding of physiological dynamics of the human soul and its intellectual failure factors are considered together.
