순자(荀子)에서 경험의 교육적 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 순자의 경험을 체험으로서의 경험, 인식 토대로서의 경험, 습관화로서의 경험으로 나누어서 그 의미를 고찰하고, 각 양태의 경험이 학습에 기여하는 바를 논하며, 순자 경험론의 제한점을 검토하였다. ‘체험으로서의 경험’은 학습자가 매개체를 통하지 않고서 사물이나 현상을 몸소 경험하는 것을 의미한다. 학습자는 체험을 통해 대상이 지닌 속성을 명확하게 알 수 있는데, 환경 조건의 개선과 도구 사용을 통해 보다 높은 수준의 경험에 이를 수 있다. ‘인식 토대로서의 경험’은 인간이 지닌 지각 능력에 인지적 토대를 제공하는 감각 경험의 획득과 누적을 의미한다. 학습자는 이 과정을 통해 인지적 개념을 가질 수 있고, 인지 능력을 계발할 수 있다. ‘습관화로서의 경험’에서는 바람직한 행위의 패턴을 습득하고, 그러한 경험을 누적해야 한다는 것이 강조된다. 교사는 학생에게 습관의 내용을 제시하고 스스로 모범이 됨으로써 습관화에 기여한다. 그러나 순자의 경험은 그것이 질적으로 구분되고 도덕적 습관화의 경험을 한층 강조한다는 점, 그 내용이 기존 규범으로 한정되며 주로 교사에 의해 마련된다는 점, 다양한 반응양식을 인정하는 대신 일정한 모범의 방식을 답습하게 한다는 점에서 제한점이 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the meaning of Xunzi’s (荀子) idea of ​​experience by dividing it into ‘experience as direct experience’, ‘experience as a basis of perception’, and ‘experience as habituation’ and to discuss the contribution and the limitations of experience. Experience as direct experience means that the learner directly experiences an object or phenomenon without going through a medium. The learner can clearly know the properties of the object through direct experience, and can reach a higher level of experience through the improvement of environmental conditions and the use of tools. Experience as a basis of perception refers to the acquisition and accumulation of sensory experiences that provide a cognitive foundation for perceptual abilities. Through this process, learners can have cognitive concepts and develop cognitive abilities. Experience as habituation emphasizes the need to acquire desirable patterns of behavior and accumulate those experiences. The teacher contributes to habituation by presenting the contents of the habit to the students and becoming a model for themselves. However, Xunzi s idea of experience has the following limitations: the quality of experience is differentiated, and the experience of moral habituation is further emphasized; the content of the experience is defined by norms and is mainly provided by the teacher; Xunzi does not take into account different responses to experiences and requires learners to follow exemplary response patterns.
