플라톤과 불교사상의 교육적 의미 비교

국문 초록

본고에서는 플라톤의 동굴 비유를 중심으로 플라톤과 불교사상의 교육적 의미를 비교하였다. 서양의 철학으로 대변되는 플라톤의 사상과 동양의 종교로 대변되는 불교사상을 비교하는 일은 난센스일 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 두 사상의 비교를 시도하는 이유는 이들 사이에 존재하는 간과하기 힘든 유사성 때문이다. 차이와 달리 유사성은 당연한 것이 아니라는 점에서 우리는 차이보다 유사성에 더욱 주목할 필요가 있다. 본고는 ①학습자: 죄수와 중생, ②교육자: 철인과 부처, ③교육의 본질: 전환과 깨달음에 대한 논의를 통해 교육의 보편적 양상과 이상을 살펴보는 한편, 플라톤의 교육사상을 불교적 관점에서 읽어봄으로써 교육에 대한 보다 다면적인 사유를 촉구하고자 하였다. 본고에서 살펴본 바를 묶어 한마디로 표현하면, 플라톤과 불교사상에서 공통적으로 드러나는 교육의 모습은 “‘神的인’ 상태를 실현하려는 인간의 노력”이다. ‘교육은 무엇을 위한 발판이어야 하는가?’, ‘교육자로서 나는 어떤 사람이어야 하는가?’ 종착 없는 교육의 길에서 우리가 앞으로도 계속 되물어야 할 물음이다.

영문 초록

This article compared educational meanings of Plato and Buddhism by focusing on Allegory of the Cave of Plato. It would be nonsense to compare Platon thought which is represented by Western philosophy and Buddhism which is represented by Eastern religion. Nevertheless, the reason of attempting to compare the two thoughts is because of similarity that exists between these two thoughts and is hard to overlook. Given that the similarity is not a matter of course unlike differences, it is necessary to focus on similarity rather than differences. In this article, we tried to promote more multifaceted thoughts of education by reviewing educational thoughts of Plato from the perspective of Buddhism while examining universal aspects and ideals of education through the discussion about ①learner: Sinner and mankind, ②educator: philosopher and Buddha and ③essence of education: Transition and enlightenment. To say what we have looked in this article in one word, the educational aspects commonly revealed in Plato and Buddhism is “human effect to realize ‘divine’ state”. ‘What should an education be a stepping-stone for?’ or ‘What kind of person should I be as an educator?’ are questions we need to keep asking ourselves while moving to the path of education where is no end.
