통합 수업을 지향하는 대학영어의 수업 방안과 그 효과

국문 초록

본 연구는 교양교육으로서의 대학영어가 지향해야할 모델로 언어활동의 4가지 영역이 골고루 강조된 통합 수업을 제시하고 구체적인 수업 방안을 소개하였다. 통합 수업은 학생들의 교양을 높이고 사회 참여 의식을 신장할 수 있는 읽기 자료를 기초로 구성되며 읽기 전 학습, 읽기 중 학습, 읽기 후 학습의 3단계로 나누어질 수 있다. 읽기 전 학습에서는 토론을 통하여 배경지식을 쌓고 글 속에 등장하는 어휘들을 미리 공부하여 글의 내용을 효과적으로 파악할 수 있는 기초를 다지고 읽기 중 학습에서는 이해도 측정 문제를 풀면서 글의 전체적인 내용 뿐 아니라 중요한 세부 사항들을 이해한다. 마지막으로 읽기 후 학습에서는 전체 글의 요약문을 완성 또는 작성하고 글의 주제와 관련된 에세이를 쓰는 창의적 활동을 수행한다. 대학영어의 중급반이나 고급반을 위하여 디자인된 이러한 통합 수업은 학생들의 강의 평가를 통하여 그 효율성이 충분히 검증되었다.

영문 초록

This paper suggests that College English for liberal arts education should aim at an integrated course which emphasizes all four skills of language abilities almost equally and then introduces the teaching process specifically. College English as an integrated course is based on the reading material which enhances the level of students’ culture and encourages their social participation, and it is divided into three steps such as pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. Before reading, students will cultivate the background knowledge through group discussion and study new vocabulary words to understand the contents of the reading material more effectively. While reading, students will develop more advanced reading comprehension and critical thinking skills with guidance from the instructor and through discussions with their peers. After reading, students will perform more creative activities such as summarizing the entire article and writing an essay of which topic is related to the given article. This course has been designed to develop English language proficiency for intermediate and advanced classes, and its efficiency has been proven through students’ course evaluation.
