국문 초록

이 논문은 기존의 한국인 학습자들을 위한 영어강좌 개설현황이나 효율성에 대한 경험이나 통계에 바탕을 둔 연구와는 달리 연구자가 외국인학습자와 한국인학습자를 대상으로 한 영어강좌를 담당하면서 경험한 것을 바탕으로 학습자들에게 보다 도움이 되는 영어강좌 수업방법에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 영어는 현재 가장 영향력 있는 국제어의 하나로 단순히 의사소통 수단을 넘어 교육의 매체로 이용되고 있다. 이는 국제화와 세계화의 여파로 다양한 모국어와 문화배경을 가진 사람들이 영어를 토대로 세계무대로 움직이고 있기 때문이다. 영어권에서 비영어권 출신 유학생들이 영어로 수업을 듣는 것은 당연한 일로 여겨지고 있지만, 이제 비영어권국가에서도 자국의 학습자들의 세계무대 진출을 돕기 위해, 또 우수한 해외 학자와 유학생들을 유치하기 위해서 영어강좌를 개설하고 있다. 영어강좌에 대한 끊임없는 논란에도 불구하고, 한국에서 영어강좌 개설이 늘고 있는 이유 또한 이와 맥을 같이 하는 일이다. 이 추세는 당분간 계속될 것이다. 그래서 보다 효율적인 학습자 중심의 수업방법에 대한 논의가 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study examines some effective teaching methods that are more beneficial to international and domestic students in EMI classes. Unlike the quantitative research based on the questionnaires of Korean students and teachers, this study is based on the personal experience of the writer of this paper in EMI classes. English is currently one of the most influential lingua francas and is being used as a medium of instruction beyond mere means of communication. This is because people with different native languages and diverse cultural backgrounds are moving to the world stage based on English as a result of globalization. Although it is considered natural for international students from non-English speaking countries to take classes in English in English speaking countries, it is now common for some higher education in non-English speaking countries to open EMI classes to help their students advance to the world stage and to attract excellent foreign scholars and international students. Despite the constant controversy over the EMI classes in Korea, the reasons why the number of EMI classes is increasing seem to be the same. This trend will continue for the time being. Therefore, discussing more efficient learner-centered teaching methods is needed.
