A Case Study: Effects of Analogy on EFL Korean College Students English Reading Comprehension

국문 초록

제 2 외국어 학습자들이 수정되지 않은 실제 영어 원문을 읽을 때 익숙하지 않은 개념이나 단어를 만나 독해를 성공적으로 못하는 경우가 발생한다. 이전연구에서 보여주듯이 제 2외국어 독자들은 과학과 같은 내용중심기반 수업에서 실제 모르는 단어를 만나 독해에 어려움을 겪어 지문의 수정이 다양하게 시도 되었다. 이 연구에서는 영어 능숙도가 높은 집단과 낮은 집단이 직유적 표현을 사용한 영어지문과 사용되지 않은 지문을 읽을 때 읽기 이해력이 어떻게 달라지는 알아보았다. 읽기 이해력 측정이전에 학습자들의 배경지식을 측정되었으며 이후에 지문을 읽고 회상과업과 객관식 문항을 각기 풀었다. 지문을 읽고 기억나는 것을 쓰게 하는 회상과업에서는 두 집단 모두 직유적 표현지문을 읽을 때보다 원래 지문을 읽을 때 기억을 더 많이 한 것으로 나타났다, 하지만 두 집단 모두 직유 지문을 읽을 때 지문에 대한 이해력은 그렇지 않을 때보다 높게 나타났다.

영문 초록

When foreign language learners read unmodified real English texts, they frequently encounter unfamiliar concepts or words that make them to unable to read successfully. This study examined whether or not analogies in English science texts facilitated Korean college students English reading comprehension, and if the EFL readers performed differently according to the reading task types. A total of 12 participants took part in this case study, and they were asked to read either analogy or nonanalogy versions of two passages in English. In order to investigate if analogies in expository science texts increase the students English reading comprehension, recall scores and multiple choice test scores were compared with one another. On the basis of the recall scores, analogy for both passages did not seem to enhance L2 reading comprehension. However, the scores on the multiple-choice questions showed some positive effects of the analogies on Korean college students’ English reading comprehension.
