국문 초록

본 논문은 일제강점기 경부선의 부설로 신흥도시로 성장한 대전의 의료환경의 변화에 대하여 주목하고자 하였다. 대전의 사례는 근대 도시로 성장해 나아가는 신흥 도시의 의료환경이 어떻게 조성되는지 살펴볼 수 있는 사례일 뿐만 아니라, 조선총독부가 각지에 설치한 자혜의원 및 도립의원이 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 설치되었고, 운영되었는지를 확인할 수 있는 사례이기도 하다. 이에 본고에서는 도립대전의원이 설립되기까지의 과정과 도립의원 설립까지 대전지역에서 활동하던 의료인의 수와 분포를 파악하여 도립대전의원이 대전 지역에서 갖는 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 아울러 도립대전의원의 규모와 기능 확대를 살펴보면서 지역의료에서 차지하는 도립대전의원의 위상을 확인하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 의료사 연구인 동시에 지역사 연구에 의료사를 어떻게 활용할 것인지를 다룬 사례연구라고 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 의료사와 지역사 연구의 접점을 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the changes in the medical environment of Daejeon, a city that emerged with the opening of the Gyeongbu Line in 1905. Daejeon’s case not only permits an examination of how a new medical environment is created in an ascent city that is growing into a modern urban space, but also offers a microhistory of the Jahye hospital (Charity hospital) and provincial hospital, which was established and operated by the Japanese Government-General of Korea and its provincial administration. This article explores the significance of the provincial Daejeon Hospital in that area. To clarify this, this article traces the process leading to the establishment of the hospital, the scale of medical personnel working in the Daejeon area and the location of other local hospitals up to the establishment of the provincial hospital. In addition, in order to confirm the status of the provincial Daejeon hospital in the broader context of local medical care, the size and range of functions of the hospital are analyzed. This research offers both a case study for integrating medical history into local history as well as offering a contribution to the broader field of medical history allowing historians to reflect on the contact point that links medical history research and local history research.
