국문 초록

이 논문은 미군정기 의사의 사비 유학의 과정과 내용을 검토함으로써 해방 후 미국의학의 도입 경로와 그 특징을 이해하고자 한다. ‘일본의학에서 미국의학으로의 전환’은 해방 직후 한국 의학사를 설명하는 주된 테제임에도 불구하고 그 도입 경로에 대한 연구는 공중 보건 체계의 재편과 의사의 미국 유학이라는 주제에 머물러 있다. 특히 의사의 미국 유학에 대한 연구는 주로 정부나 대학의 후원을 받은 유학생들에만 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그러나 해방 후에는 그들보다 훨씬 더 많은 의사들이 사비를 들여서 미국 유학을 떠났다. 따라서 관비 유학생만을 탐구하는 것은 미국의학 도입의 전모를 파악하기 어렵다. 그런 관점에서 이 논문은 미군정기 사비 유학생인 의사 서석조의 사례에 주목한다. 서석조는 미국 유학 후 연세대학교 의과대학, 가톨릭대학교 의과대학에서 근무했고 훗날 순천향병원과 순천향대학교를 설립한 인물로, 그의 미국 유학 경험은 한국 의학교육의 재편에 광범한 영향을 미쳤다. 서석조의 유학 과정을 추적함으로써 이 논문은 사비 유학이 미국의학의 중요한 수용 경로였음을 주장하고, 그를 통해 도입된 미국의학의 내용과 특징을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to understand the path and characteristics of the introduction of American medicine after WWII in South Korea by exploring the process and contents of privately financed study abroad by doctors under the US military government. Although “the shift from Japanese medicine to American medicine” has been the main theme that explains the Korean history of medicine in the late 1940 and 1950s, the research on the subject has been limited to the reformation of the public health system and the doctors who studied in the United States sponsored by the government or universities. Far more doctors than them, however, went to the United States for their internship and residency program at their own expense. Therefore, the doctors’ personal study abroad is needed to be examined to grasp the full picture of the introduction of American medicine in Korea. From that point of view, this paper focuses on the case of Succjo Suh, a privately funded doctor studying in United States. After returning to Korea, he worked at Yonsei University, Catholic University, and later founded Soonchunhyang Hospital and Soonchunhyang University. By tracing the process of Succjo Suh’s study in the United States, this paper a rgues that the privately financed study a broad was an important route to accept the American medicine, and reveals what the Korean doctors learned and wanted to introduce to Korea through their study in the Unites States.
