국문 초록

공분산분석은 교육분야의 준 실험연구 또는 실험연구에서 널리 이용되어지고 있는 통계방법이다. 공분산분석이 타당한 통계방법이 되기 위해서는 여러 가지 기본 가정들을 충족해야 하며, 이 가정들 중 특히 ‘집단내 회귀 계수의 동질성’ 가정이 만족되지 않을 경우는 이 분석방법이 더 이상 실행될 수 없다. 그러나 학교 현장에서 교육연구에 관심을 두고 있는 교사나 교육분야의 전문 연구인들은 ‘집단내 회귀 계수의 동질성’이라는 공분산분석의 가정을 고려하지 않은 채 이 방법을 빈번하게 사용하고 있다. 본 연구는 공변량과 종속변수의 관계가 집단 간에 동일하지 않을 경우 공분산분석을 대체할 수 있는 여러 통계방법들을 간단하게 소개하고, 그 중 The Potthoff’s modified Johnson-Neyman procedure와 The Wilcox’s trimmed-mean method를 자세하게 설명하였다. 또한, SAS/IML을 이용하여 얻은 데이터로 이 두 가지의 방법이 어떻게 응용되어지는지를 기술하였다. 본 연구는 ‘집단내 회귀 계수의 동질성’ 가정이 만족되지 않을 경우 공분산분석을 이용하지 말아야 하며, 공분산분석을 대체할 수 있는 여러 다른 대안적 통계방법들을 사용해야 함을 주장한다.

영문 초록

Analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) is frequently applied in educational research ignoring the fact that when the assumption of the homogeneity of regression slope within group is violated, ANCOVA is not an appropriate procedure any more. Teachers or researchers interested in educational research have used this procedure regardless of the equality of regression slope within group. The purpose of the present study is to present available alternatives to ANCOVA when the within-group regression slopes are heterogeneous: blocking or stratification, Hollingsworth’s F statistic, Johnson-Neyman procedure, Potthoff’s modified Johnson-Neyman procedure, Rogosa’s three alternatives, and Wilcox’s trimmed-mean method. Furthermore, the Potthoff’s modified Johnson-Neyman procedure and the Wilcox’s trimmed-mean method are applied under the unequal slopes condition using one numerical example presented here to introduce teachers or researchers the appropriate alternatives to ANCOVA. This study also insisted that teachers or researchers interested in educational research should know the limitation of ANCOVA and use statistical procedures appropriately.
