원오극근 다선일미 연원설 주장에 대한 재고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘다선일미(茶禪一味)’ 연원을 규명하는 연구로 그동안 연원으로 주장된 원오극근(圓悟克勤, 1063-1135)선사의 ‘다선일미 네 글자 진결(眞訣)’에 대해 심층 분석하여 다선일미 묵적으로 전해져 내려온 정황과 연원설으로서 한계점을 조명하였다. 다선일미 연원으로 주장된 원오극근의 ‘다선일미 네 글자 진결’은 일본의 대덕사에 은밀하게 보관되어 전해져 내려오고 있다는 설이 있다. 이 연원설은 일본의 다도 고전인 『산상종이기』에 기반되어 있었다. 그러나 지금까지 실제로 이 ‘네 글자 진결’을 본 사람이나 기록은 나타나고 있지 않으며, 이와 관련된 원오극근의 묵적 2점만이 현재 박물관에 전시되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 원오묵적 2점을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같았다. 원오묵적1은 다선일미 묵적으로 호구소융선사에 대한 ‘인가장’으로 인식되어 전해져 내려오고 있었으나 실제 분석 결과 원오극근선사가 제자 호구소융선사의 공부를 이끌기 위해, 조사들의 행법과 같이 엄격하고 치열한 정진을 통해야만 붓다의 혜명을 이을 수 있다고 강조하는 법어인 것으로 나타났다. 원오묵적2에서는 원오극근이 제자 호구소융의 공부가 큰 인연을 요달(了達)하여 불조(佛祖)가 격식과 종지(宗旨)를 초월하였고 확연히 통하여 백천만억의 가없는 향수찰해(香水刹海)를 포용하였다는 표현을 하였는데, 이를 미루어보았을 때 원오묵적2가 호구소융에 대한 인가장인 것을 알 수 있었다. 고찰 결과, 원오묵적1, 2에서 모두 ‘다선일미’ 네 글자는 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 선종에서 조사(祖師)의 언구는 붓다의 교설(敎說)과 동일격으로 보기 때문에 당시의 상황을 미루어보았을 때 비록 ‘다선일미’ 네 글자가 적혀있지 않았으나 ‘다선일미’를 상징하는 묵적으로 신비성이 더해져 ‘다선일미 네 글자 진결’로 와전되었다고 사료된다. 고찰 결과, 이 묵적들은 일본 다선일미의 연원으로는 볼 수 있으나 최초의 연원으로 주장하기에는 한계가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to determine the origin of concept of Daseonilmi(茶禪一味) by analyzing a theory of four genuine letters of Daseonilmi by Won Oh Geuk Geun (圓悟克勤, 1063-1135), which has been appeared in recent debates. This theory was proposed by the Japanese classic book, San Sang Jong I Gi((山上宗二記) , and it claimed that the four-letter record of Daseonilmi which is the origin of its concept was secretly kept in Daedeoksa(大德寺) Temple in Japan. However, it was found that there has been no certain research or record found witnessing this writing of four letters. Instead, there are only two records left today related to Won Oh Geuk Geun, which are currently displayed in the museums in Tokyo. According to the analysis of the records related to Won Oh Geuk Geun, the record 1 was the master Won Oh Geuk Geun s sermon to his disciple Ho Gu So Ryung(虎丘紹隆), a letter which emphasized the importance of rigorous self-discipline and great devotion. The record 2 was the seal of approval that the Seon master Won Oh Geuk Geun confirmed Ho Gu So Ryung has gained enlightenment officially. As a result, the study found that none of the records of Won Oh Geuk Geun showed the four letters of Daseonilmi directly. Given the fact that the words of Seon masters are normally treated as the same as Buddha s doctrine in Seon Buddhism, it could be assumed that those two records of Won Oh Geuk Geun were treated as a symbol of the concept of Daseonilmi, even though the four letters were not exactly written on the records. It could be predicted that they became misinterpreted as the genuine four letters of Daseonilmi as mystiques about them have grown over the time. In conclusion, the study found that the records of Won Oh Geuk Geun could be interpreted as the origin of Japanese Daseonilmi attributively, but they lacked the validity to become a genuine origin of the concept of Daseonilmi.
