성 아우구스티누스(St. Augustine)의 조명적 지성과 영성의 교육적 관계성

국문 초록

오늘날의 기독교교육은 인문사회과학에 치우쳐 있다. 특히 인지신경과학 혹은 뇌과학 분야들이 현대 기술과학의 발달로 뇌와 마음의 관계를 과학적 실험 결과의 객관적 지식으로 주장하면서 각 학문분야에 영향을 미치고 있다. 그와 같은 과학적 접근 방식들은 주로 전통적인 형이상학적이고 초월적인 이원론을 거부하며 물질주의적이며 환원론적 일원론에 기초하고 있다. 심지어 기독교교육의 분야에서도 객관적인 과학적 지식을 교육과정과 상황 속에 실천적으로 매우 유용하게 사용하고 있다. 그러나 자칫 객관적 과학지식에 치우쳐 유대-기독교의 전통인 지식과 지혜의 구별에 기초한 신앙교육의 문제를 무시함으로 기독교교육의 정체성을 잃어버릴 수 있게 된다. 특히 지식과 지혜를 분명하게 구별해주는 아우구스티누스는 그의 글, “영혼의 위대함”, “삼위일체론”, “하나님의 도성” 속에서 인간의 이해와 궁극적인 기독교교육이 도달해야할 목적을 상기시켜준다. 그러므로 이글은 기독교교육에서 다루고 있는 주제들 가운데 신앙과 이성, 감각적 지식과 지성적 지식 그리고 지식과 지혜의 관계를 아우구스티누스의 관점에서 재고해 보고자 한다. 특히 아우구스티누스의 조명적 인식론에 초점을 두고 논하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Today’s Christian education has been mostly inclined to be focused on the humanities and social sciences, especially dealing with cognitive neuroscience or brain science. It aims to understand the relationship between the brain and mind through scientific experimentation. Such scientific approaches are based on the materialistic-reductive monism against metaphysical-transcendental dualism. For Christian educators from these perspectives have tried to apply scientific knowledge to practical use in the educational process and context; educators may lose the identity of Christian education in the process of teaching and learning matters of faith, regardless of the distinction between science and wisdom from the Jewish-Christian tradition. In particular, the understanding of Augustine’s distinction, which is apparent in The Greatness of the Soul, The Trinity, and The City of God, reminds us to achieve the highest reaches of the human understanding, the ultimate aim of christian education. Therefore, this article reconsiders Augustine’s perspectives on the issues of christian education such as the relationship between faith and reason, sense knowledge and intellectual knowledge, and science and wisdom. Its discussion argues that christian educational perspectives are in the connection with both ‘divine illumination and epistemology, namely, both in connection to God’s Spirit and intellectual knowledge.
