최용신의 농촌 계몽운동에 대한 기독교교육적 고찰

국문 초록

최용신에게는 ‘여성 농촌 계몽운동 선구자’란 칭호가 따른다. 그녀는 일제시대 자신의 삶을 농촌계몽운동에 투신하여 불꽃처럼 살다 간 여성이다. 특별히 천곡학원이라는 교습소를 통하여 교육활동을 함으로서 암울한 시대 속에서 희망없이 살아가는 농촌에 희망의 불빛을 붙인 사람이다. 그녀는 1909년 일제통치가 시대 속에서 태어나 넉넉지 않은 환경 속에서 어린 시절을 보내며, 기독교 신앙생활을 형성하며 루씨여학교와 협성여자신학교의 학창생활을 통하여 기독교적 민족적 정체성을 확립하게 된다. 1931년부터 시작된 샘골마을 천곡학원에서 아동은 물론 청년 부녀자 등을 대상으로 야학을 통한 문맹퇴치에 노력을 기울였다. 농가부업의 증대방안으로 학교주변에 뽕나무 심기와 누에치기 권장을 감나무 등 각종 유실수도 마을 주민에게 골고루 나누어 주기도 하였다. 학부형위로외화 운동회 등의 다양한 활동을 통하여 지역의 단결력과 상호간의 신뢰를 이끌어 내기도 하였다. 일본 유학과 예기치 않은 병마로 인하여 그녀의 농촌계몽운동은 3년이라는 짧은 세월로 끝났지만 우리는 최용신의 농촌계몽운동을 통하여 다음과 같은 기독교교육적 통찰을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 통전적인 기독교 신앙을 형성하기 위해서 기독교인으로서의 사회적 책무의식에 대한 교육적 실천 및 접근이 절실히 필요하다는 점이다. 둘째, 대한민국의 기독교인으로 살아가면서 한국적 정황과 삶의 문제들을 기독교적 맥락에서 이해하고 살아갈 수 있도록 하는 주체적 정체의식을 교육하는 것이 필요하다는 점이다. 셋째, 여성들의 지도력이 사회와 기독교교육현장에서 새롭게 평가되고 인식될 필요가 있다는 점이다. 남녀 평등에 관한 인식이 많이 발전함에도 불구하고 여전히 교회내에 존재하는 성역할 고정관념에 대한 비판적이고도 창조적인 성찰을 통하여 여성이 주체적이고도 창의적인 지도력을 발휘할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 필요하다. 더 나아가 ‘공감의 지도력’ ‘함께 함의 지도력’의 지도력을 새롭게 인식할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

For Choe Yongshin, the title “The Great Woman Pioneer who Led the Enlightening Movement in the Rural Area in Korea” always follows. She gave her life for the movement during the time under the rule of Japanese imperialism. She inflamed the fire of hope in the hearts of Korean people who lived a hopeless life by establishing an institution called Chungok Hakwon (Institution). She was born in a poor home and adopted Christian faith in her youth age. She learned not only to be a strong believer but to have a sound identity as Korean woman at the Lucy Woman School and Hyupsung Woman Seminary as well. She put her heartfelt effort in promoting literacy for children and women at the Chungok Hokwon during night times since 1931. Besides, in order to help them earn more income, she bought and distributed various plants such as white mulberry, persimmon and others trees for the village farmers. She hold athletic meetings and talent shows for parents in order to build trust in the minds of the whole village people. She worked for them sacrificially. Unfortunately she became ill while she studied in Japan for further study and her enlightening movement was ended abruptly after three years. Though her movement was short in time, her enlightening movement left a big mark on the hearts of the next generation. It is not an overstatement that we learn much Christian education insights from her life and thoughts as follows. First, in order to form a wholistic Christian faith, educational praxis and apporaches in arousing the awareness of social responsibility need to be taught. Second, subjective consciousness of identity education which will help understand national circumstances and life problems as Christians in Korea is definitely necessary. Third, woman leadership needs to be acknowledged in society and Chrtian education fields with much emphasis. We need to correct the wrong understanding on the role of women in society and provide the opportunity for female leaders to demonstrate their capability through their subjective and creative reflection. Furthermore we need to acknowledge the leadership of “empathy” and “being together.”
