국문 초록

언어 터부란 고대인들의 토템을 비롯하여 종교, 정치, 시대 등 다양한 원인에 의해 이루어진 언어에 대한 제약이다. 이러한 제약은 언어 공동체에 대해 특정 단어나 표현의 사용, 특정 주제 등의 언급을 금기시하며, 따라서 이를 대체하기 위한 수단인 완곡어법이 발생했다. 고대에는 신성한 존재나 두려운 대상 등을 직접적으로 언급하는 것이 금기시되었다. 신이나 악마의 이름, 사냥감 등에 대해 그것을 대체할 수 있는 새로운 이름을 고안하여 표현하였고, 이것은 언어 공동체 전체에 작용하는 규율과 같은 것이었다. 이후 종교적, 이념적, 시대적 상황에 따라 다양한 유형의 언어 터부 현상과 그를 대체하기 위한 완곡어법이 존재하게 되었고 현대에는 개인 간 커뮤니케이션에서 발생하는 언어에 대한 제약이 그 주류를 이루고 있다. 금기시되는 어휘는 신조어나 외래어를 통한 완곡어법으로 대체되기도 하고, 의미 확장이나 관용적 표현의 도움을 받기도 한다. 그리고 이렇게 형성된 완곡어법은 명칭을 대체하는 기능뿐만 아니라 부정적 의미나 상황을 완화시키거나 의미를 장식하고 감추는 기능을 갖는다.

영문 초록

Linguistic taboo is a restriction on language made by various causes such as religion, politics, and times, including the totems of ancient people. These restrictions prohibit the use of certain words or expressions, or mention of certain topics, in the language community, and thus have resulted in euphemisms, a means to replace them. In ancient times, it was forbidden to directly refer to sacred beings or feared objects. They came up with new names that could be substituted for the names of gods and demons, prey, etc., and this was like a rule that applied to the entire language community. Subsequently, religious, ideological, and states of periods led to the existence of various types of linguistic taboo and euphemisms to replace them. Currently, there are the most language taboos that occur in communication between individuals. Taboo words may be replaced by euphemisms through neologisms or foreign words, or may be helped by extension of lexical meaning or idiomatic expressions. And the euphemisms formed in this way not only have the function of replacing the name, but also have the function of mitigating negative meaning or situations, decorating and hiding the meanings.
