국문 초록

근대 세계에서 박물관은 국가 혹은 민족 정체성의 대표적 상징으로 기능한다. 이 연구의 목적은 거시 역사적으로 유럽에서 박물관이라는 제도가 만들어지는 과정을 검토하면서 특히 유럽 세력 간의 경쟁적 요소가 얼마나 강력하게 작동했는지를 밝히는 일이다. 일반적으로 근대 박물관의 역사적 형성에는 세 개의 커다란 순간(momenta)이 있었다고 할 수 있다. 첫째는 왕조 또는 국가 차원에서 자산 개념의 발전이다. 근대 국가가 등장하기 이전부터 유럽의 권력들은 이미 예술의 후원자로서 역할을 강조하였고, 그 결과 다양한 예술적 자산을 형성하게 되었다. 둘째는 프랑스 대혁명을 계기로 형성된 민족 정체성의 상징으로서 박물관의 등장이다. 왕실 중심의 국가에서 민족 국가라는 형태로 정치의 변화가 진행되면서 왕실의 자산은 이제 민족의 자산으로 그 개념을 확산하였던 것이다. 마지막은 유럽 주요 국가의 제국주의적 확산과 맞물려 박물관이 특정 민족 뿐 아니라 인류의 자산을 축적하고 공개하는 제도로 발전한다. 특정 도시나 국가가 이제 자신 뿐 아니라 인류를 대표하는 상징으로 박물관을 인식하는 단계다.

영문 초록

In modern world, museums have a representative function of state or national identity. This research aims at examining the macro-historical process of the institutional formation of museums in Europe, especially focusing on the competitive mechanism between European powers. In the historical formation of museums, three momenta can be distinguished: The first is the development of the concept of patrimony at the dynastic or state level. Even before the rise of the modern state, European powers had insisted upon their role as patron of arts and have consequently accumulated artistic patrimony. The second momentum has been that of the museum as a symbol of national identity since the French Revolution. With the political evolution from dynastic state to the national state, the focus of artistic patrimony has also changed from dynastic to national. The third momentum has coincided with European imperialism so that museums had to transform themselves into patrimonial institutions for human civilizations. Museums therefore had to become not only showcases of city or national heritage but also those of humanity.
